Well I only have liability on my S14 and I don't want it gone ;)

I went to a local shop today and they wanted $550 installed for the top of the line viper alarm (750esp or something) -- the one with the pager remote and all the "cool" stuff.

I am decent with wiring so i was wondering do you guys think that a price like that is worth it? I have been seeing these things on online for about $400 and they come with instrusctions. Now I don't know where I would fine car-specific intructions so I just assumed to go somewhere.

I am looking for suggestions as to what alarm to go for (i don't mind spending some $$ if it will kick butt) for my S14. I am in teh makings of a fuel cutoff switch but i also want the alarm. So what are you all using and what to you like/dislike about them? You think $550 is to much installed? Thanks!

that is a lot of money... and that alarm although it has a pager, still doesn't have very good range... Clifford makes really good alarms, they are the only manufacturer with a special ignition kill that makes it impossible to start your car, but i don't think you can get one with a pager.

the best pager alarm by far is the Compustar 2WSS-AS... the range is just insane and is a very reliable alarm... you can find them on ebay for around $270 shipped, much better than the Viper alarm, however getting someone to install it for under $200 might be tough... alarms are really difficult to install and i wouldn't recommend attempting to install this type of alarm for your first time...

I have the Viper 500ESP on my I30T. It is very hard to defeat because it works with Infiniti factory system. Do some research on the Viper and other alarms. The installation is the key to any you choose and placement of the brain is also very important. You should not have to spend much over $300 total.

Does anyone have the compustar themselves? I actually have the alarm, but have yet to install it.

candela, I forgot to mention that I use the Autolock on my brake also. I did alot of research on this device and it is an excellent back-up to any alarm you select. Autolock.com will give you the info.

I have the first of the Viper Pager series... the 790XV. I payed $400 without the remote start install. No problems at all. just remember one thing when looking for an alarm...stick with DEI products only. **** Prestige and the rest of the knock offs.

DEI - -Clifford -Viper -Python -Automate -Sidewinder -Rattler

Go to Google and plug in "Todd Ramsey Security". It is a forum for professional installers but they are patient and will talk to you if you have questions. This is where I learmed that a DEI alarm when coupled to the Infiniti factory system is a bear to defeat. Add the Autolock on your brake and it would be a very devoted crook who would spend time with your car.

DEI is the best hands down. The only company that had anything on Viper was Clifford and DEI bought them out several years ago. That's how DEI got the two way pager technology. I've used 4 different DEI systems in my own cars; Viper 300ESP, Viper 600HF, Viper 550ESP and the newer 560VX. The 300 is in it's third car and still perfect. I wouldn't trust anything else and I've been installing for 3 years now. It's the best.

no compustar is the best!! :pface well that's at least what i'm puttin in my car once i can afford one... have the autopage 750lcd two way pager but range sucks... compustar uses Spread Spectrum Technology, somethin that the military uses, and you can page/start your car from over a mile away if you want... my buddy has one and i'm sooo impressed that i just gotta get one... oh and don't worry about buying a turbo timer if you're gonna get one of these alarms cause it has one  :

I have the Avital 4300 security/keyless/remote start from DEIi got it from Best Buy for $300 and i love it, installation is free, and if you slip the guy a little $$ you can get whatever you want on it: i got a shock sensor, starter kill, hood pin and trunk pin, courtesy light, ear piercing interior siren, and will get a window module that rolls up the windows when you arm it and roll them down with the keypad. and the best part; i can crank it from across a parking lot. http://www.directed.com

Cool! Is the brain hidden way away like on the passenger side? Or under a seat and wireless?

He gave you a window control module? That's an $80 part. You got a deal there.

eh, the brain is just above the steering column, but it stays hidden, its just wedged up between harnesses but it is highly tamper proof. if the power is disconnected, the starter becomes void. same with the siren. if you unarm it you can easily remove it and change functions. the antenna is horizontal at the top of the windshield and the keypad has about 1800000000000000000 codes or 2^66

Aspinballer, the typical theft of a car with an alarm is that two crooks will approach your car. One at your hood and one at your driver window. If they really want YOUR car because it is special they will break the window and pop your hood. (Now the siren is wailing). Next the siren is silenced because it is torn away from its's mounting. (About 5 seconds). Next the brain is pulled down and out from under the dash. (99 per cent of brains are there and the crooks know it.) At this point the starter disabler is defeated. If you have a factory system and the aftermarket alarm was installed to back that system you will still be protected to the extent of the factory alarm and shut-down system. A DEI installer will correctly install your alarm to back up your system making it extremely impractical for a crook to screw with you. If you do not have a factory alarm backing your system your car is toast at that point. (If the brain is wireless or hidden way up out of the way you have bought yourself a BUNCH of time.) TIME is the crook's worst enemy.

All that being said if your car is not a high theft target you will probably be fine with the LED blinking away. They will move on to the one that has no blinking LED.

No, I have never stolen a car..I was an investigator on a car theft problem here in Memphis. I got a real lesson on how these guys work. Just some food for thought.

Lastly I would pick up an Autolock from Autozone to pop on your brake. Very tough to defeat and a great back-up.

My 2 cents.

If they really want a car, they'll just pull it onto a roll back all the while some guy standing there swearing about his POS car and it's alarm. If they're just looking for an easy take, Scott's right the slightest deterrant (flashing LED) will send them to the enxt target.

i dont think my car is a high target, hailstorm and previous onwer got the best of it. and the starter disable is seperate of the alarm and only activates when the alarm is disabled. but thanks about the info on the 2 man system.

You are welcome Aspinballer. Sounds like you can rest easy. I would look into that Autolock for your brake for it is extemely hard to defeat in combo with your alarm. (About 40 bucks from Autozone).

No I am a data engineer for Avaya, actually I will be working for G3 Technologies as on April 1. I was trying to point you in the right direction for auto security. Autozone seemed to be right. (Low price for Autolock). Any more questions I would Google for "Todd Ramsey on Security". Will show you how cheap security systems are unreliable.

Buy an Autolock and forget the Club. The Club is worthless. And your security system is as good as where they put the brain. If it is under the dash hanging there on the driver side where 99 percent are hanging it makes no differance if you got a Viper or whatever. A pro crook will eat your lunch. Hide the brain! Regardless you should be thinking DEI.

After doing some major research and comparing alot of the higher end systems, I've fallen in love with just one. The Clifford Avantguard 5. Prox, shock, and tilt sensors included, along with built in window control, anti car jacking system, and secondary wireless start interupt. It's the T-total s***.
