My 1998 Pathfinder has had some electrical issues for the last many years. First sign was an interior light would come on at times and stay on. That came and went and stopped happening after a few months. Next to happen when I hit a good sized bump my doors would unlock. This also came and went and disappeared finally. Next is debatable but I think the check engine light is coming on as a manfifestation of the electrical gremlin. (Still happening). After this, the alarm started going off at various inopportune times. Not at all fun. I finally ended up pulling the fuse for it and left it out. End of problem.. until now. The engine would not turn over the other day. Battery was fine, no clicking. Nothing. Totally 100% unresponsive when I turned the key. I assumed it was this "electrical gremlin" and figured something was potentially activating the alarm, or at least wires that kept the car from starting. I went through a few steps to try and activate the alarm on purpose and after this the car started up immediately, as if nothing ever was wrong. Now I am worried that this will happen again or while driving it may suddenly quit on me. So.. how to fix this mess???
Does anyone know how to troubleshoot and repair the alarm in the 98? Or even better, an idea on how to begin to troubleshoot this? I have a voltmeter and some 12v dc knowledge but not enough to know where to begin on this. Any scrap of knowledge will help.. Thanks.
