AIV removed, completely?

I recently removed and plugged my AIV. I removed the ENTIRE assembly, from the airbox all the way to the exhaust pipe. However, there is a vacuum line that connected to the actual valve which I am unsure of how to fix. For the moment it is plugged with RTV, is there a way to remove this assembly in a better/safter way?

The AIV doesn't matter anyways. Just as long as you don't leave it plugged into your manifold and plug up the AIV box. But you said you plugged the hole on the manifold anyways. Your check engine light will always be on, but no damage is done to the car, and you'll most likely pass emissions too.

The AIV is activated by vacuum, which is turned off/on by a solenoid valve. There are many solenoids in the car, but the solenoid that controls the AIV should be directly below the reed valves. At least that's where it is on the '90.

A solenoid valve is a tiny cylinder about an inch long that has three (3) vacuum lines attached to it, and an electrical plug.

Since you no longer have an AIV, you might as well clean up your engine bay by removing the AIV solenoid valve as well. Then you can trace the vacuum lines that attach to the solenoid to find their sources, plug them at the sources, and discard all the extra hose length.

I have since removed the bracket, solenoid, vacuum lines, and plugged them all with vacuum caps at the source. As soon as I drive it again I'll see if it throws a code or if the idle is rough. Thanks for all your help!!!

All went according to plan, removed everything, unplugged the sensor, blocked off the two vacuum lines at the source. My car idles MUCH better than it did before, and it freed up a whole lot of engine specae. This modification cost me a tube of silicon and two nickels, and 2 vacuum caps. Great idea for anyone who feels so inclined! Also, I'll be doing my emissions test next week, so we'll see how the numbers measure up.

So what's up with the nickel thing?

Everyone talks about it but I don't understand, do they just fit perfectly to seal the hole left by the AIV? Or is it something I will understand when I remove the AIV?

The hole has a lip on the inside, if you feel around you'll see what we're talking about. The cap that you unbolt to take off the AIV can be put back on, with two nickels sandwiched in between the lip and the cap. You'll see all when you take it off.......

Okay thanks.

The car is cooling now, after looking at it, are you talking about the thing that connects the AIV metal tube to the exhaust itself? It looks like a little metal plug?

So basically when the AIV system is removed, the only thing left to show it was ever there will be that little metal cap that's on the exhaust header itself?

you need to remove that cap from the metal tube, I used a grinding wheel to take the lip off the tube and remove the cap. Place two nickels inside the hole in the exhaust pipe, and push them up against the inner lip. Then torque the cap back down minus the pipe that was previously running through it.

Thanks.

It stood to reason that the pipe going into the cap would be flared on the end, I'll just hacksaw it off.

Thanks alot for the help.
