hey, on the sr20 swap directions on heavy throttle, it says remove the AIV pipe and the turbo heat shield... is the AIV pipe necessary to make the car run?

no it is not. Its an emission device that you can remove.

Remove that pipe from the dump pipe along with other related AIV components and plug up that hole.
