aiv, egr? emissions removel, setup

first off I have searched and not really found a definite answer. also this is an sr20de rwd. can I plug the two holes? is it necessary to have it hooked up with suction and a catch can? what is the purpose of this part, I know what the function of the exhaust part is, but what is this valve cover/oil drain deal?

My engine actually was already missing the emission stuff, I plugged up the hole to the exhaust down pipe. (pic) this is the way I had my sr20de set up with the hose going to the intake, from the "T" on the valve cover, then a hose from the "T" to the other pipe coming from under exhaust mani. oil has pooled in the intake manifold, so i guess I needed to have a catch can?

my question is what setup is correct, I've seen alot of different setups, here are some pics of them on my photobucket. can I just plug up the 2 holes?. how is yours set up or what is your opinion?

so what I mean is the blowby of the engine. I researched this on wiki and It seems there is supposed to be a pcv valve? would it be ok for me to just have an oil catch can between the two: crankcase, valvecover ventalation tubes and intake? or do I need to have a PCV valve too????

why hasn't this subject been discussed in depth before? sounds like a pretty important aspect of the engine. after researching, it seems this is very important to engine health!
