Since we have a paintball thread, I figured it was only fair to the players without the paint to have a thread as well.

In fact, I just bought a Western Arms Gas Blowback M4A1:

I'll have pics of it up once I receive it in a week or so.

It'll be a fun rifle to shoot, and it's making me itch for the snow to melt so I can start playing again.

I've been interested in trying a gas blow back rifle - I have a GBB now (WE Tech Dragon) which I love, but I've never fired a gas version rifle.

I currently use the Dragon as my side arm, and have the UTG Full Metal M4 Commando with a Gemtech Halo barrel extension (silencer), surefire rail flashlight, and a 1x45 red dot tube on top (sometimes I put my old sniper's 4x32 on it to make it look bad ***...)

I'm always looking for some good games to play in, but can't find any really on the east coast...damn laws.

Hi-Cap, mid-cap, or low-cap mags anyone? I personally hate the rattle, so i'll either go realistic or use a mid-cap around 80-100 rounds...

I use mid caps on my AEG M16, and my P90 hi-caps use a feed rammer that keeps the rounds from rattling in the mag. I hate hi-cap rattles.

Here's a pic of my current AEG. It's a Classic Army M15 rifle. It's never shot correctly. It should have crono-ed in the mid 300s out of the box, but was barely making 260. I figured it was a compression issue, so I started eliminating compression problems that are notorious in CA rifles, and it still hasn't fired any better.

I was using a UTG M14 for a while, but in typical China-clone fashion, the gears stripped out, which led to a gearbox jam, that fried the trigger assembly. It also smashed its own cylinder and piston head in a previous breakdown as well.

In fact, the most rock solid reliable AEG I have owned to date is my TM P90. I upgraded the spring in it and tossed a madbull tightbore barrel and hop up bucking, and it shoots like a champ. It's just a shame that it's limited in range.

This will be my first GBB rifle, but I use a TM M1911A1 as my sidearm. In fact, I stumbled across the WA M4 at eHobby Asia while I was looking for an aluminum frame for the pistol.

I'm excited about the GBB rifle. Ever since WA started talking about doing GBB, I was interested. Tinker Airsoft Group in Tinker AFB have reported reliability issues with the air valve/loading mech if you start upgrading pieces. 2Roy (a korean company) has already released a reinforced part as has Pro-arms (which will probably be what I get). If the snow clears up and I can set up a decent range in my backyard, I'll try to get some groupings done with it.

Marlin, try looking on MAAPR. It's a forum/registry for players in the mid atlantic region. There's some people from the Jersey area, IIRC.

Peter, it's a huge change of pace from paintball. But i prefer it. You may or may not like it. Also, you'll probably get fed up with kids that don't call their hits. At least in paintball, the paint keeps them honest. In airsoft, I just light 'em up when they don't call it.

It depends on the team you play with. Airsoft requires you to be able to either run and gun at someone quickly before they have a chance to react, or to sneak up on them and take them by surprise. Long range fights are rare unless the guns have been upgraded. The flight pattern of the average .20g BB loses consistency past 120+ feet on a standard TM level gun.

My team is comprised of a lot of LEOs and former Army, so our games tend to be more about stealth and surprise than run and gun, although there's always a place for run and gun.

if I had the extra money, I would...but I can't justify spending that much on airsoft when I can buy real guns at the moment.

Once the snow clears out a little more, I'll try to get it outside for some actually shooting. I'm totally excited about this thing! I'm already formulating a list of goodies to get for it.

Wow!

It's amazing how similar it is to the real thing, down to the sear in the lower receiver.

If you don't mind me asking, what did it set you back? I may just have to pick one up myself.

Western Arms has always been known for their quality.

What upgrades are available? I've only owned AEG's and gas handguns, so these are new to me.

I bought mine from Ehobby Asia and I spent a little over 500 with shipping. A standard magazine costs 75 (no bolt lock) or 100 (with bolt lock).

Upgrades so far equal to a new bolt catch (the stock one breaks after a while due to the way they manufacture it). RA-Tech has the best one as it's a solid one piece. G&P makes one, but it's a two piece and I've seen those break as well.

There are a plethora of bolt carriers out there. The best are the lightweight aluminum ones. Reducing the weight of the bolt assembly uses less gas, so you can get more gas from each magazine charge.

There are also upgraded bolts (the gas nozzle inside the carrier) as well as hop up units. The biggest upgrade I think that should be done is to increase the inner barrel length. WA put CQB length barrels in each gun no matter how long the outer barrel was. It was an effort to keep muzzle velocity under the Japanese maximum on 134C.

Other than that, there are already metal bodies. Prime makes the best as they're really close to 1:1 with the real steel dimensions. The WA body is just slightly off in some places, as is the G&P. With a prime body, you'd need either a prime bolt carrier, or an adapter as the body is just a hair longer and the carrier needs elongate as well.

I have seen some hammer groups that have roller bearings to reduce wear on the bolt carrier, but I think that will only be a longevity issue if you upgrade to an aluminum carrier. The stock hammer is steel, so after a while, the steel would wear down the aluminum.

Hey guys..

I've played paintball for a few years, so I was wondering, how exactly is an airsoft game played? Is it just honor system? Do you pelt someone until they cry uncle?

I ask because I've never been to an airsoft event, only my friend and I have played. We got a couple of $20 pistols from walmart and opened up on each other inside a house we were renting for work. We had safety glasses from work and I put in ear plugs. We weren't wearing anything other than tee shirts and shorts and we agreed not to go for head shots. We were shooting at ranges of about 10-30 feet. We drew blood a couple times but it got the adrenaline going.

Since I've never seen a real game before I was wondering how it was supposed to be played.

It's honour system. On my team, if you don't call your hits, be expected to be lit up for it.

There's always the troublemaker that will try to get away with not calling his hits. I make it my job to make sure he calls his hits.

The cheap Walmart guns pale in comparison to the ones that cost a decent amount of money. They tend to shoot fairly low muzzle velocities.

for real, don't call hits, it's time to aim for fingers...

I've been lit up by my friend's TM M4...I think it was stock shooting around 300fps...f**kers sting.

Lolz - that's when I take out my .2g's and dump 30 into someone at like 360 fps...they'll call a hit after that.

Bart - what weight are you using with your gas powered M4? I use .25 - .28 in mine, and get about 300fps with it, and they shoot straight as arrows...

I have a store of .25s I use with my P90 and CA M15. I was gonna use those with the WAM4, but I haven't shot any rounds through it let alone chrono it. Heck, I probably won't get to chrono it for a while.

AEG

ProNo need to buy gas - just charge your batteryMore widely available for fullsize guns (not pistols)Lots of customization optionsEase of use and ownership

ConGearbox issues (stripping gears, bad internals)Water!

GAS

ProMuch more powerful and reliableAwesome to shootPistols are much better (vs AEG pistols)

ConExpensiveMore maintence requiredNeed to buy gas (A LOT - unless you use a propane adapter like some do)High velocities can be ruled out for some games, and your friends hate you when they get hit with a 500fps shot.

I looked around for a bit until I found the replica Beretta that shoots about 300 fps. Funny story, my work buddy bought the replica colt 1911 and true to life, it started jamming and wouldn't fire. It met it's maker at the business end of a 6-cell mag lite.

I was shocked at how accurate this thing is. Believe this or not, I actually killed a mouse with it at about 15 feet. I was watching TV in my basement room at night and started seeing this mouse running across the sill plate back and forth through the doorway to the unfinished side of the basement. I put in a full mag and waited. It took about 7 shots, but I got him. I don't think it killed him, but he was stunned long enough for me to get to him and finish him off.

I has also become handy to train the cat that likes to jump on things at 5 am who has become impervious to the water gun. Fluffy doesn't jump on my s*** anymore.

Marlin any company suggestions/ places to order from.

How often do you run out of gas. Do they suck it down like paintball guns do?

I only use gas in my Pistol - depending on how much I play, a can of gas ($10 or so for good Green Gas) lasts probably around 1000 shots or so (my GBB eats gas like whoa.)

I usually get my stuff from Shorty USA ( http://www.shortyusa.com ) because I can drive to their store in Delaware. Good prices, good service.

There is also HotSpot Airsoft ( http://www.hotspotairsoft.com ) which is a retailer in Long Island that my friends have used and its pretty good too.

http://www.evike.com is a huge store where you can get anything in the world that you want - it's in cali though, so you have to mail order. But any specialty gun or part, etc, you'll find it there.

Did you want mfg's too?
