I would like to improve the air intake on my 98 QX4 and can not find any aftermarket items for this vehicle. Can I take my current air box and add a few big holes before the air filter to get more air in? will that mess up the computers readings? I see right after the air box inside the tubing there is this electrical item (mass air maybe) will this harm it?

You mean more hot summer underhood air? Sure, if you want to sap your horsepower.

well it only gets air through a single small air intake about 2" and I wanted to make another hole on the fender side so it gets more air in. There are no aftermarket air intake kits for this vehicle so I guess it's the next best thing I can do without it looking bad

Surely you would think someone would have made something that fits the QX4 or pathfinder vehicles, but I guess not

I guess that only leave one option in making something that's better that the stock set up.

Maybe the 2" opening was more than sufficient? Nissan engineers most of their intakes and even exahusts fairly well.

I decided to just cut a hole so with the air box removed I took a hole saw and cut a hole in the side facing the fender, and before the filter. I also removed the roof racks and went for a drive. It appeared to be a little more responsive on the throttle. I'm hoping with the removed roof racks that with less drag it might get a little better MPG's. anyways it can't hurt.

If any mod could improve published HP/Torque without causing some other problem or durability or emission or noise issue the Marketing department would give the engineer a raise or at least an extra weeks vacation.

The entire earth's atmospheric pressure is pushing 14.7 psi thru the 2" OEM hole.

Hey my wife asked me the other day, what did I do to her QX4. I said why what's wrong? She said it appears to run better and has more power. So I told her what I did and she said thanks it really helped.

after test driving it myself it appears to have helped with improving the HP.

maybe it's getting close to thinking about doing something to the exhaust

Are you sure no water can get into the intake?

I know it sounds nice, but really in the summer the car will feel like crap. Because the car like to get cool or cold air in in the engine for the engine to run more efficintly, What you have from what I can assume from your descrtiuon is a warm air intake.

If you must keep the aftermarket intake in the cold but switch over in the summer unless you like less HP.

Do some reasearch and you will see that were all telling you the truth.

Sure the throttle may be a little more responciev but that may only be because the intake is making more noise thus making it look like its go better and faster, And thats borderline RICE.

But there is no way to tell that you have gained 5-10 HP by the seat of the pants, you need a dyno for that.

O an be prepared to lose your MAF after a while, Because all that unfiltered and more air going into the engine is going to make the MAF dirty and then eventually destroy it.

Sorry if that sunds blunt but thats my 2 cents.

Good Luck.

the air is all going into the air filter first. actually it was done in june of 2008 and it worked way way better than before, even in the heat of summer.Cheers!

Well, that may be but the flames and "NEUSPEED" stickers I put on my 82 HP tuner made a huge difference. Just imagine what the coffee-can tail pipe extension and erector set trunk spoiler-tail is going to do!
