I had originally posted at the same time I had rear brake caliper dragging, I was also experiencing bucking during a moderate to heavy acceleration from a stop, but never if mashing the pedal at highway speed.

Here is what I originally wrote:
"..when accelerating from a stop, the car felt like it was surging forward, then decelerating, then surging. It would do this 'bucking' thing about 4 times before settling down. I couldn't tell if I was just hitting the gas pedal wrong (you know that pivot point issue that the dealer wanted $390 to fix). During a recent 'bucking' episode (it happened 2x) I noticed once the VDC light was flashing but I was on dry pavement."

Mechanic friend put a computer on the engine while running and determined it was running lean (too much air). Could it be one of many oxygen sensors going bad? Was related to the bucking? He just happened to rest his hand on the air-intake hose and what do we know, a huge crack in the hose. He pretty much says "here's your problem". We duck-tape up the hose and within a couple of days, no more bucking!

I called the dealer and parts dept said $330 for an "Air Intake Assembly" for the Q45 2002. I checked Autozone, Napa, Pepboys. Nobody carries it. Does anyone know where I could buy this part for much less??

Dealer ONLY part. Like 95% of every single part on your vehicle. If you plan on keeping this vehicle forget the names Autozone, Pepboys, and Napa as they will only be able to help with fluids, pads, and small pieces. Also note that none of these places know anything about a Q45 and should not be trusted for any services other than the simplest things on your car. The junkyard will be the only place you are going to find one for cheaper unless you outsource the dealers and follow the product back to Japan and buy multiple in bulk. i am sure you can get one from $50-100 used.

Please include your location. A simple car-part . com search revealed about a dozen "air flow meters" for your 2002 Q45 from NY - FL - CA and many places in between from $45-200.

Cheers

dealer called the part an air-intake assembly. I didn't see it listed on car-part.com - you called it an air flow meter. The mechanic friend called it an air intake boot. What should I be looking for?

Is the specific part the large diameter corrugated tube that is between the mass air flow sensor and the throttle assembly? Two days ago I removed and cleaned everything on my 02 that could be considered the "air intake assembly". The only part that comes close to your description is that corrugated tube. According to the Service Manual, that tube is integrated into a larger plastic part called the "air duct". I am not sure if you can only replace the tube - you may need the entire "air duct" part. If you have the service manual, the part is on page EM-15. Sorry I don't have the actual part number, but I hope this helps somewhat.

yes, that is the part I am speaking of. I do not have the service manual. Perhaps I should consider buying one.

Either way. There are a dozen or so listed on car-part. If you call and describe the exact item they should be able to get the correct item. other than that maybe a member on the site can locate one at a pick and pull

Don't pay for the service manual. They are available for free download here on NICO.

Just pick your year. The file named fwd is the table of contents and the one called idx is the index in alphabetical order.

Since that corrugated tube usually gets tossed whenever someone installs a "cold air intake" kit, there should be a few of 'em floating around on the used parts market...

$227.34 online. Still expensive, but better than $330.00

The part number is 16576-AR010 if you want to search it that way. I'd probably go new on this part... I've heard of this before, replaced one on my 90Q in the past, and the one on my wife's G is cracking, so it's a common issue. Fresh rubber would probably work best.
