A question related to the "check engine" light?? The light went on a while back and had it checked. My mechanic informed me that all air sensors/solodoids appear to be in good working order, and advised that the problem could be a faulty Air Flow Meter. Is this possible? Could this be the cause of the pre-ignition ("pinging") that I hear during acceleration?

After looking at the AFM, appears that I can replace it myself with ease, or is there more to it? And is the AFM covered under Nissan's Warranty?

Thanks!!

Your airflow meter is well out of warranty went out at 60k miles. I doubt its causing the pinging. Are you running premium fuel in it. If you dont you will get pinging. I have seen some incedents where the coils are cuasing the pinging , as well as the VTC system. What was the exact code stored? This will give a more clear indication as to what might be causeing the pinging if you are infact running premium fuel.

Yes, I use only premium fuel. I will have to check on the code.

I purchased an extended Nissan warranty to 100k. Will this cover repairs that typically expire at the 60k milestone?

Yes it will. Theres very little the extended service contract doesnt cover, with the exception of wearable parts, ie brake pads, belts, ect.

i use 87 in my 99.5, i know they changed in 01, but i never get pinging, did it happen almost EXACTLY when you hit 90,000 miles, or just some random mileage? Try disonnecting the batterry for like 10 minutes, I believe that will still clear any mileage based check engine lights they program in there to remind u, or if not maybe a button under the dash, behind the speedo. my guess though, is, unless the pinging is really really bad and just started same time the light came on, the two are totally unrelated

Nissan does not have any time or milage related programming in the ECM to turn on a light. They havent used a milage interval light in 20yrs.
