Air Filter

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

Has anyone replaced the air filters/cleaner with the K&N reusable? Some of the reviews I've found online say the increased airflow gave the computer problems, but these were in G models. Any experience in an EX? Thanks!

It'll be the same as G or any other car. I had K&N filter on my Legacy GT and I ended up with a check engine light. I've cleaned the air flow sensor and reset the check engine light and switched back to a stock filter. There're at least 2 types of K&N filter - one round and another one square that goes into the factory box. IMHO, the later one is not worth messing with at all since there's no gain but you end up with one more thing to maintain and clean in every so often. Also, the both types make your engine sound a bit differently. I loved how engine with round K&N filter sounded in older Maximas. In my RSX there was just extra noise and it didn't sound pleasing. In Legacy Gt, a square K&N added a little extra whizzing noise - nothing special - nor good nor bad. So it depends on a car so you have to hear it on an EX to know if you like it.

I was looking to replace mine as well, well overdue. Was thinking of going with K&N or this JDM HKS Hybrid Twin Air Filter.. Have no experience with any, I'm not sure if its even worth spending so much money on these filters. I see some filters that are really cheap but afraid to even consider them.

I can only repeat, IMHO, the square ones are not worth the hassle. If you want to do anything, go with CAI or a simple round on installed outside of the original box, assuming it's available for Ex35. As far as installations, they're usually easy to install and no special tools required. You can find instructions on the web and see if you're able to do it.

I disagree with the comments about a waste of time. I replaced the two airfilters in my EX with K&N and have used them in all my cars including my other car which is a 2010 Maxima. The filters are lifetime and yes you do have to clean them every 20-30k miles but it takes like 15 mins to clean and maybe a couple hours to allow them to dry in the sun. If you keep your car 4 years or more its worth it. I wouldnt say there is a noticeable increase in horsepower or mileage but it sounds better during acceleration and you never have to buy an airfilter again.

By the way-never caused a code to show on any of my cars. Just make sure to wipe the filters with a dry cloth before install and after cleaning/re-oiling them, take it easy on the oil when spraying it on. The instructions are very clear as to how to clean and re-oil them when you have to do that.

I agree with Atlanta..... I have been using K&N on all my cars since I was 17... No issues other than slightly better MPG and maybe 1% more HP... taking our 297hp beast to 300 or so. I think it sounds a little better when you gun it too.
I put them on my EX after I had it for a couple months... Love them. Never once had any check engine light...

I guess then it's a matter of taste and/or car. I didn't care for the sound change in my Legacy Gt.
...Also, since didn't see a benefit, didn't want to add another maintenance item.
How did the sound change in EX35?

Air Filters are a maintenance item for cars regardless if you decide to do a K&N swap. I would agree cleaning it is more work than going to the store/online, buying a new one and then changing it. However, due to the cleaning frequency required, the overall time difference is not substantial IMO.

The sound difference between stock and K&N drop in replacements is not huge. A little deeper sound would possibly describe it.

Keep talking, guys! You've almost convinced me to try them again. I'd be tempted though to go for the round one
