Air filter soaked in oil,where is it from?

Hi guys,we bought a slightly used 04 Murano,when I checked the air fliter yesterday it was soaked in oil.Also there was oil in the filter box on te walls.Where is that from,how did it get there?

That's a new one for me... I'd be concerned that the MAF sensor is contaminated if there's that much oil in the airbox.

Can't imagine how it could get there, unless somehow the PCV is malfunctioning and somehow sucking oil vapor into the airbox....

I'm grasping at straws here.

Did you purchase from a dealer? If not, I'd get it to a Nissan dealer ASAP and see what the deal is - It's still under warranty.

Thanks a lot.I bought it from a private party.Wfat's a MAF sensor?I did get engine service soon.

MAF = Mass Air Flow sensor.

There's a tiny, thin wire in there that measures amount of airflow and density coming into the intake.

If it's all nasty, it can mess with your engine's operation.

Easy enough to clean, but I'm thinking something else is wrong - Let us know what the dealer says.
