So from what I have read, the basic rule of thumb is "always use OEM" for just about everything. Does this hold true for the air filter as well? I have always been a fan of K&N and their website says that they have one that will fit the 91 Q. So at a one time fee of $50 vs. multiple $15, I was wanting to just get K&N and be happy with it.

Is there any reason I should not do that to anyones knowledge?

Look at it this way... Stock air filter is $7 from joe.. The K/N dont flow better and DEFINITELY dont filter near as well, and the oil you use on them gum the MAF which has issues anyway...

So treat yourself to 5 years of air filters for that $50!!!!! Get a new one every year or so...

As a Q45 owner, if you want to know how to care for the G50 in particular, you must read Q45tech's posts. All of them. When you do, you will find several downsides to the K&N filter, and all non-oem engine air filters.

I was gonna go the K&N route as well, but was swayed by Qtech's posts and put a new OEM one in from Joe last week. (Joe = "Everything Infiniti" link on left)

I definitely would not use the K&N filter...great airflow at the expense of proper filtration...they do market a very good oil filter however (made by Champion Labs...similar in construction to the Mobil 1 filter...also mfg by Champ Labs).

I have been using an Amsoil 2-stage foam filter (not an oil wetted gauze like the K&N) for about a year and a half with very good results. These are "full depth" as opposed to "surface type" filters.

Ufortunately, it doesn't appear they have an application for the Q. I have had no problem with the "high tack" oil getting on the MAF sensor.

Has anyone ever heard of Trueflow? I just started carrying this product and havent heard any reports, good or bad. Of course the company says its great and they have about 10 write ups in car mags that say its "better".

Theres been a lot of new airfilters come out. That AIR HOG (cant remember the company), and that one... IMHO anything other than OEM doesnt make it into my car.....

Regardless of if they're fiberous, foam or whatever, they wont filter as good as OEM!
