air filter looks burnt??

so the other day when i was just doing a check up on my s13 i opened the air box, and the filter mainly the side closer to the intake hose looked to be burnt??
any idea what might have caused that??

Intake backfire? What kind of S13? What motor, any issues?

its a ka24de motor. I will be driving and the car would break up sometimes as i accelerate. The gas mileage also sucks!

yea i puffed smoke out my filter one time. its most likely your timing. retime the dizzy and see what you get. also check you ground wire for the ignition control module, it should be on the back of the head(exh side) and then check the module. mine fried on me and thats what my problem was the whole time.
