I've been mulling over all the tasks that need to be done for me to pull the KA out of my S13. One thing I have a question about is pulling the A/C refrigerant lines. Since I have a '91, I believe it still has Freon (R12) in the system. If I drive the car to an A/C certified shop before I start pulling the motor, and have them recover the refrigerant from the system, will it then be safe for me to pull off the refrigerant lines? Or are there other additional steps I need to take...relieving pressure from the lines or something of that nature.

I know this is probably a dumb and obvious question, but I just want to make sure 1) I don't vent a whole bunch of R12 into the atmosphere and 2) I don't lose an eye, a digit, or blow up something in the process. Unfortunately, A/C systems aren't something I know a whole lot about, so your help is greatly appreciated.

Uhhh.... I didn't have a single drop of R12 in my car when I pulled the AC off. However, the SR clip had a full load of R134a in it. Man that shtuff sprays everywhere! And it is all green and sticky and hell to get off of your block.....

And make sure you vent it in a ventilated place, cuz that shizz will make you lightheaded....

Aha! So if the R12 is gone, then the system isn't pressurized, hence I can pull it off w/o killing myself. Next time I'm in Houston, we'll go get some deep-fried bacon, it'll be on me.

and don't try to deny it, I know you huffed the R134 on purpose, just for some cheap thrills.

:D

SHHHH!!!! Don't tell anyone about the huffing bit!!!

If your AC is not blowing cold air and if your compressor is fuxored, most likely you do not have any R12 left and it is saft to crack the seal on the lines.

BTW: that place that has the chicken fried bacon also has 24oz sirloin steaks for like $10 including salad, fries or baked potato and a drink!

Nope, it's still blowing cool air...so I have some residual R12 left.I'll just get it recovered before I yank the engine. Thanks for the help!

That's a pretty good deal. You Texans always get the bargains on beef...a meal like that is roughly double the price up here in The Garbage State. Think I'll still pass on the bacon, though, I want to live past 35.
