air conditioning problem

My air conditioning ceased to work on my 05 Murano. I brought it to mechanic who took 1 look and say that something had punctured the condenser unit (likely while driving on freeway) and that the unit needed to be replaced. I've owned cars for 25 yrs and never had this occur. However the a/c unit on the 05 is open to the hazards of the roadway, there is no screen to stop an object from puncturing unit. $500 later my AC works fine- they replaced the unit but I think this is a design flaw. I like my car well enough but cannot say that I'm a big fan of Nissan especially after the lock actuators went out on all 4 doors and now this- almost $2,000 in stupid repairs that should be guaranteed/designed better.
