I have a 90 s13. The air conditioning has been working fine. A couple of months ago, it started having an intermittent problem where it would start to run very roughly with the ac on. If you turned it off, it would be fine, and then when you turned it back on it stayed fine. Recently it has been happening frequently, and the rough runnning is accompanied by a faint sort of grinding sound. First step I'd like to be sure whether its the ac itself or the electronics that are activated when the ac is on.

I tried searching the archives but didn't find anything. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Could be your compressor coming to the end.

ok first of all to find out if it is the bearing on our compressor or your ac wiring system. locate your compressor on a 89-90 model its on the drivers side right by your distributor. You should find one cable coming out of it. if you take a 12 gauge wire or smaller connect it from it and bring it to your battery's positive terminal you should hear your compressor solenoid bring in the pulley of the compressor. Once you have successfully done this, disconnect it and have some one start the car, while the car is running connect that same wire again to your positive again and see if runs the same with your ac on, if it is then you're for sure it is your compressor
