air conditioner makes noise? "eh eh eh eh" sound?

this just started happening recently, when i turn on the air conditioner right after i start the car, it makes a constant "eh eh eh eh" sound every half a second or so. it disappears when i drive for a little while and it doesnt happen when im driving at highway speeds. can anyone help me? im scared of using the air con on auto mode cause im afraid something will break or get worn off. this is a '98 i30.

It would not be easy unless you can isolate the source of the noise. It could be coming from the AC compressor-clutch, blower or somewhere else. Next time you start the car, select ECON mode. In this mode, the compressor will not engage but the blower is still operational. If you hear a noise, most probably it's coming from the blower (behind glove compartment). If there is no noise, then switch to AUTO mode. At this point, the compressor will engage and if there is noise, problem is on the compressor-clutch assembly. You can also check the tension of the drive belt coupled to the compressor.

Another possibility is a stuck or jammed mix door...usually leads to a sort of whirring/clicking noise.
