Infiniti J30t 1997. 140k. Unknown history. Bought it 6 months ago and air was cold. Now after winter I discover no cold air.

First of all, how do i tell if the compressor itself is working?

If it is working, should I recharge the freon with the stuff you buy at the parts store? Or does it require a shop?

How much is the compressor if I need to replace it? How much should I expect for the other services?

THX

If the compressor is cycling then you will notice and increse in RPM when you turn on the air conditioning.

The second way to tell is to look at it physically and see if the clutch is spinning.

Recharging without the proper equipment only assures that it will not be done correctly.

Take it to a shop and get the diagnosis.

Then get it by submitting the VIN to dealer or Infiniti Customer Service after you register yourself as the new owner.

Download the FSM and TSB at http://www.nissan-techinfo.com/infiniti/ for a one day fee of $20.

If it has failed, the defective parts plus a new drier need to be replaced before it is evacuated and the correct kind and amount of lubricant and refrigerant are added.
