As far as plain old chatting goes, they both work equally well for me. Sure you can do more with an IRC client, but AIM works fine if you just want to talk to some people.

I try to avoid installing AOL software of any kind on my computer, so I'm using an old version of Trillian, which integrates AIM, ICQ, IRC, Yahoo Chat, mows your lawn and feeds your dog.

I've never seen a pop-up from Trillian, and the app itself has never registered as spyware to AdAware. Then again, I'm running a rather old version so it may have changed.

Edit: I'm using version 0.74 on one computer and 0.73 on another. BTW, AIM chat room is currently empty (except for me).

Although it is very possible I could have ****ed up. But I believe I put it in right.
