My timing chain was getting noisy, so today I replaced the tensioner with a new oem one. Once it was installed I cranked the engine a few times with the fuel pump disconnected, then connected it started it. The car ran alot quieter, but also about 250 rpms lower than normal idle, 400rpms lower than it should have been at (for cold idle).

I shut it off and tried to start it again and it won't start. I can crank away and nothing. Makes a funny noise every once and a while, can't really describe it other than like two balloons rubbing against each other .

But that might be unrelated, as it did it a bit before anyways. Could the timing have slipped?

Installing a new tensioner shouldn't change your timing.Do you hear the fuel pump priming when you put the ignition key to the on postion?

Ya I can hear the pump. I pulled the valve cover, and wtf timing is out like 180 degrees at TDC. The tensioner must have changed it, as I had checked the cams a week before and they were dead on.

So after resetting the cams, I put the tensioner in and this time manually turned the engine over, and as soon as the tensioner took up the slack the timing jumped back to where it was before! As in like 180 degrees off!

My only guess is that maybe when the tensioner is out the chain hangs off the crank teeth, and when the slack is taken up it moves around on the crank teeth.
