It is finally done. After about a month and a half I am back on the road. The five lug conversion, Q45 Brake swap, and rear rotor upgrade is done. I finished it last night at about 10 pm in my gravel driveway with an old bedroom lamp as my shop light.

For those of you first joining us in our reguraly scheduled program. My car is a 1991 240SX SE 5-Speed. I started gathering parts for this project in mid August. I first was going to do the 300ZX swap but later for price and other reasons decided to go with the Q45 setup.

So here is the final list of upgraded parts. With prices

2 Q45 Front Brake Calipers $70.00 @ Junk Yard

2 Q45 Powerslot Front Rotors $192.96 @ Mantaray Motorsports

2 NISMO Front Lower Control Arm Bushings $11.00 @ Courtesy Nissan

2 Energy Suspension Poly Front Strut Rod Bushings $38.00 @ Courtesy Nissan

Labor for Pressing Bushings and Ball Joints into Control Arms and Bushings into Strut Rods $150.00 @ Local Shop

1 Hitachi 9/16" Carbon Steel Drill Bit (for enlarging the strut bolt holes) $15.86 @ Lowes

2 Moog Tie Rod Ends W/New boots and Grease Fittings $94.31 @ CarQuest

2 S14 Moog Front Ball Joints W/New Boots $67.40 @ CarQuest

3oz Grease Gun, MOBIL 1 Synthetic Grease, Brake Bleed Kit, DOT 4 Brake Fluid $42.33 @ CarQuest

2 S14 Front Spindel and 5Lug Hub Assemblies $180.00 @ User on NICO Board

2 S14 Rear Slotted and Dimpled Brembo Rotors $137.00 @ TurboImport.com

2 S14 Rear 5Lug Hubs $160 @ User on NICO Board

1 Set McGuard Spline Drive Lug Nuts and Locks $86.00 @ Summit Racing

1 Set 1996 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS-T Wheels and Tires $0.00 @ Borrowed from a friend

1 Set VGX Brake Pads, Shims, and Clips for 1994 Q45 Front and 1 Set for 1991 240SX Rear $87.53 @ HM Prefromance

GRAND TOTAL = $1332.39

Thats why you never look back at what you spent. SUCK! I've spent way to much money on what i thought was going to be a fairly easy and inexpensive upgrade, but enough is never enough so one thing leads to another. Plus you have to watch out for all the little things that you don't think of till your knee deep in Nissan parts. It would have only taken me about 2 days to complete this swap if I had all the parts and knew then what I know now about swaping all this stuff. Now if I can only find the Watanabe wheels I want and figure out what suspension I want to go with:D well I'm off to bed where I can dream of more ways to spend countless more dollars and hours on my car.

Nice!

Haven't seen many people do the Q45-to-240 brake conversion. Is it pretty close to the 300zx swap?

As I understand it the only real difference in the 300ZX swap and the one I did is that you have to have conversion brake lines for the 300ZX brakes. The Stock 240SX lines have banjo bolts on them that will bolt right on to the Q45 brakes with out any modification. The other two factors in my disision where price $70 dollars for the Q45 front calipers VS. $170 and up for the 300ZX Calipers (I know people on here say they can be had for much cheaper but I could not find any such deal.) and also the fact that the 2 Piston Q45 brakes would not be so much more braking power as to make the rear brakes not as effective, also to really do the 300ZX swap you need to swap out the master cyclinder with one from a 300ZX.

Yes you are correct I could have but that would have been $450.00 dollars just for the front hubs. I purchased the entire Front Spindle/Hub assembly for $180.00, the Front Ball Joints for $67.40, the Drill Bit for $15.86 and the labor for the Ball Joints being pressed in $50.00.The Grand Total of $313.26, still cheaper than the 5 Lug Conversion hubs. Those are the only parts required for the swap. I just needed to replace my tie rod ends becuase my old ones had boots that were cracked in half and all the grease was either washed away or dried up. And the bushings for the strut rods were also a required item since my old ones were cracked and oozing. And while I didn't need to replace them I figured while I had them out and for $11.00 dollars who wouldn't want fancy shmancy NISMO Control arm bushings. So in conclusion if I had gone with the $450.00 dollar conversion hubs my total would be those, plus the Strut Rod Bushings,Tie Rod Ends,Grease and Greas Gun for Tie Rod Ends, NISMO Control Arm Bushings, and $100.00 dollars labor for pressing those itmes in. Grand Total of $711.51

Great writeup, Rivers!

How does this compare to the price on the total upgrade kit offered by Underground?
