Well I'll start off by saying that what happened Sunday night was inevitable. For those not familiar w/ my setup I've been running an IAP stage 1 kit on my 1990 fastback since May. I installed it around 220k on the stock motor with basically stock fuel system and ignition. At this point I'm 99% certain i have blown rings. Nothing catastrophic no rods through the block, no blown headgaskets, just time for a rebuild. Sadly when I do the rebuild the car will revert back to NA. If I turbocharge it in the future or not I am unsure.

With that said this thread isn't about griping or sympathy etc... I am bored at work and waxing nostalgic. The car and I have been through alot in the year I've owned it so I decided to post up a thread of how the car has evolved under my wrench w/ the help and dedication of my friends and family.

:cue schmaltzy music:

I took those within a couple of minutes of parking the car at my dad's house after buying the car. You can see my pit crew (dad/brother) under the hood of the first pic admiring the neon blue wiper arms and engine bay that had been the scene of a dust-bunny holocaust.

The car's second incarnation. got the suspension done and the rice replaced.

well that's all she wrote. I'll be rebuilding one of the spares for NA soon, removing the exhaust, seat, and some other crap I dont need in the car anymore and hopefully it will last another 240k

don't worry though, I may have found a home for the turbo...

comments/criticism welcome. Thanks for sharing all your knowlege and resources w/ me NICO, you are definitely one of the best communities on the internet.

-Aaron

I'll verify later this week when I do a pressure check on the cylinders but it runs almost like it has a misfire under mid-heavy throttle. it isnt moving any exhaust volume at all and I pulled the spark plugs last night, replaced plug wires and rotor, and checked my injector clips. everything's turning out ok but the car is chugging gas like I chug orange juice and doesnt really want to spool the turbo for sh1t.

lmfao! that's my little brother cleaning the engine bay out. I dont think i have seen a dirtier engine bay in my entire life. it sparkles now (2 toothbrushes a hundred rags, and a bottle of Simple Green later...)

sorry guys the turbo is going on the blue car. 89 coupe, base model. no sun roof, manual windows/mirrors, no cruise control, no AC, just business

it's a good deal lighter than the hatch and will be even more so when I'm done w/ it. It's alot more rigid too.

the car was awesome while it ran. I didnt race too much while I saved for a rebuild because I expected something to go out. When I first installed the kit, I had a couple of boost leaks, timing was retarded by about 4 degrees (I was running a base timing of 11 BTDC for some reason) and I did pretty well against a stage 3 WRX. we did several 30-100 pulls and he had me by about 2-3 cars consistantly. I got the leaks, timing, and other misc probs fixed and ran a Blaster 2 coil and the car pulled a LOT stronger than when I ran him. I never did a compression check because I was afraid of the results and planning on a rebuild. I surmise it was ****ty from the get-go. Ixnay on the dyno also because I was trying to save for complete build up. (60-100$ for a pull around here.)

[The WRX was running UTEC, upgraded turbo, 3" turbo-back exhaust, injectors, short shifter, intake. everything but IC. He ran it to the tune of high 13's at the track before trading it in. gearing is REALLY short on them btw. Trannies hold ~300whp then *boom*]
