what size wrench does it take to remove egr pipe from exhaust?

Im wrong. Go put a wrench up to it and see if it fits. Do this until one fits.

17 sounds right. Get ready to use some PB Blaster, do some waiting, then put it in a vice, then try to get it out. Mine may just be rusted together but it didnt budge.

well biggest I had was a 23mm and it's just a bit to small so I went and picked up a 24 and am hoping it's the right size.

I've got plenty of wrench sets, just nothing over 23mm and you can't get any sets around here that come with wrenches over 19mm. you've got to buy them 1 at a time

huge adjustable pipe wrench and lots of PB blaster.

Unless you are just removing it to throw it away, then in that case take the tube and cut it so a socket fits on and remove it that way and I found plugs at a hydrualics shop that were perfect. then Block off egr.
