I just started the swap today. My goal for 1 day was to take the KA out.

At first, things were going smoothly, the harness was giving me trouble ( didn't want to feed through the firewall ), but I eventually cut some of the wires so it would pull through. ( I did that assuming I didn't need it later ).

Everything is out, and all that stands in the way is the driveshaft, motormounts, and transmission mounts..

BUT I CAN'T UNBOLT THE DRIVESHAFT !!!

I think you're supposed to unbolt it right where it connects to the transmission, correct? It's hard to get anything in there since the bolts are so close to the driveshaft. I did manage to get 1 nut off one of the bolts, but the bolt is still not coming out. The strange thing is that it rotates freely in place, but I keep turning it, and it won't come out.

Has anyone had this problem? Solution..

Thanks in advance :(

I soaked my drive shaft bolts down with wd40 and i used a socket with an extention and a boot to help. im suprised they havent broken loose yet. You can also disconnect the drive shaft where it connects to the transmission.

Aren't you supposed to disconnect the driveshaft where it connects with the transmission?

I was under the impression that after you unbolt it at that point, that the rest of the driveshaft just sits as is, untilt he SR20DET comes in and hooks up?

No. Unbolt the driveshaft from the diff. There are 4 14mm nuts to take off and 4 bolts to remove. Then remove the two bolts that hold the driveshaft up to the chassis in the middle. You can then just slide the driveshaft out of the transmission and put it aside. Keep all the bolts and nuts together and it will go back together a lot easier! I recommend using baggies and mark each group of bolts on the bag with a sharpie.

for disconnecting the transmission from the driveshaft only:

i didnt even use a breakerbar or WD40 to do mine, they are 19mm / 3/4inch bolts, after you get the bottom bolt, just jack up one side of the back and rotate the wheel to rotate the drivshaft to gain access to the other bolts(the car should be in neutral)

you have to also take the motor off its motor mounts to slide whe whole motor forward in order to sperate the transmission from the driveshaft

here are pictures in chronological order of my KA removal if you need any other refrences:

If you unbolt the two bolts that hold up the center section and let the drive shaft drop it should just pull out of the transmission, mine did.

you shouldnt have to unbolt anything ON the drive shaft unless you are changing it and then you only need to unbolt those two on the hanger and the four on the diff. :)

but that is 6 bolts when you really only need to undo 3 and leave the driveshaft in place ;)

i dunno, removing the driveshaft just sounds like so much more work than its worth, because then you got to put it back in when you install the new motor when you could have just left it there in the first place.

Well. the motor and transmission is out.

I unbolted the "u" shaped support ( 2 bolts ). After I unbolted and freed the motor and transmission, i started pulling it out.

Lo and behold, just unbolting th U-support is enough slack for the driveshaf to slide right out of the transmission as you're taking it out.

i second that. when you do things the hard way, you learn how NOT to do it the next time. it just a learning experience thing.
