I've been searching for 4L80e controllers and found this. If a built RE4R03A trans will hold the torque I want, this may be a bit cheaper for me and a lot of people considering the 4L80e. You can keep the Nissan auto trans and have paddle shift too.

The RE4R03A is rated by JATCO at 303 lb/ft max. The early VH could be tuned to ~~ 333 lb/ft and I had one survive 205,000 miles with vigorous exercise weekly.

I wouldn't count on one surviving [built] to much over 400 lb/ft for very long depending on the number of WOT shift.

Remember the TCU> ECU drops ignition advance to zero just before shift and slowly ramps back advance during 0.7>1.0 second after shift. So peak torque on input is in 1st gear at 4,000 rpm...............none of other gears are used to seeing peak since a downshift [4600 rpm] also sees some ignition advance reduction.

When a 75 HP shot of Nitrous was used the transmissions life was cut drastically [unbuilt].

I'm running a RE4R03A in my truck. At a recent fundraiser I was taking people for rides and for 2 days I was driving a circuit. It was all first and second gear (lowrange as well) and it was hot and dry so I had a lot of traction but was still putting up rooster tails for the crowd. The normal circuit had 2 full throttle shifts from 1 to 2 so I wasn't taking it easy. Also take into account it is a full manual auto so when I say full throttle that is what it gets!

At no time did the auto temp get above 80*C even though engine temp was sitting just below 100*C.

I don't know what the torque of my motor is but it has 375rwhp and the trans is easily handling that. The guys that modified the valve body rate the trans with their VB at 600hp for offroad use.

My trans has had some work to it but not a lot really. The torque convertor has had extra welding around the spline. The rest is really the VB. Also it doesn't run any acumulator piston springs and has no line pressure control either. ie max pressure always. It is an off the shelf VB from Wholesale Automatics in Melbourne Australia. They sent it to me in NZ with no dramas at all. I've had this going for over a year now and have never really been kind on it. My theory is if you have over 500hp you may as well use it!!

Q45tech, are you even remotely interested in anything aftermarket?

There are many places that can build them to hold more torque. I'm not talking about "stock" auto boxes. TH400's are rated in the mid 400 ft/lbs. We all know they can take quite a bit more even without being built.

After spending over $43,000 in maintaining the Q for the last 18.5 years, nothing aftermarket is on my radar................have enough problem stripping my junkers for oem parts.
