just checking to see what everyone has done to upgrade the stock stereo. is adding new speakers enough or will i need to buy external amps? i was thinking about buying maybe a 5 channel amp to power the two door speakers and speakers behind the seats and maybe a 10 in sub. not sure though...give me some suggestions

Thats the setup I did in my Z. Alpine headunit, JL Audio fronts and rears, JL 10inch sub under the arch brace in the hatch and an Alpine 5 channel amp drivin them all. I put the amp under the passenger seat, theres more room then you think, believe it or not. Its a nice simple system and it sounds great.

This hasnt been updated forever, but it will give you a look at my car.

The cost is kinda of tough to give you a true number. Between $1500 to $2000 all together, its been awhile. You can spend $200 to $250 for a head unit that will give you all you need. I recommend the Polk db6500 series speakers for the front and rears. I have a set in my truck that sound better than the (more expensive) JL's in the Z, and the price is right. Very nice sound, the fronts are bout $150 and rears $100. Ebay. The JL 10" sub plain jams, 250 watts running to it. When it hits I can feel my cloths move. Again, Ebay. I like the 5 channel amp for shear easiness. Less wires to run and it fit under the seat perfectly. I went with Alpine because they actually make one, there a little hard to find. Its an expensive hobby, it basically comes down to what you can spend. (I'm actually considering pullin out the JL front and rears and goin with the Polk db6500's, they sound that nice. Its a shame for what the JL's cost too.) I've probably said what you already know, but I enjoy talking car audio.
