After searching through previous posts the answer still remains elusive to me (perhaps improving my current search skills would help). Upon removing the speaker/amp units from the front doors, it appears that one can either install 4" speakers using the black housing unit, or, possibly some 6.5" speakers without using the black housing unit.

Hopefully someone has successfully installed some 6.5's in the front doors of a 94 Q as I'm somewhat reluctant to go with the 4" speakers, due to more 6.5" speakers being available to choose from. If there are Q owners that have nicely put some 6.5's in their front doors, please reply and speak of your success.

Any feedback on this is appreciated and Happy New Year!

just finished putting a whole new stereo system in my 90' today. i used a piece of carboard thin wood from home depot. i took the black box the orginal speakers are in apart and used the half that the bolts go in as a stencil, cut out the hole for the 6.5 and wired it up using the existing wires screwed them to the door and it sounds great. i didn't use the factory Bose head unit though, but i dont think it matters

Hey guys what brand/model of 6.5's did you install? The brand I'm looking at (Focal) looks like they require a lot of mounting depth...just hope theres enough room

Why not just go with a larger round speaker and do the 6x9 in the rear? I went with the Alpine Component System spr13s and powered it with a 700 watt amp. If you are replacing the door speakers why not do the tweeters as well, and just get a component system? You do know the tweeters are also old and under performing as well as the original door speakers. I love my system.
