I loved a rental vehicle that had a navigation system. Now I am not sure if I should get an aftermarket or the original Navigation system. Please advice since I am now looking on ebay and even here for such systems.

Sincerely,

Newbie

Welcome to the forums.

I have a Magellan GPS. It works fine, and I can take it with me if I use a different car. I can't tell if you mean original as in a new car with a navi or you are planning on finding a used OEM for sale. If you don't go with the factory one, I'd go with a portable one. And I didn't want to pay 2k for the factory one. They all work well anymore.

I would go with an aftermarket.

There is really no benefit of having a factory navigation system except that it fits nicely in your dashboard.

Aftermarket costs a lot less (like 10x) and works just as good. Not to mention you can take it out and have it in another car if you choose to do so. Also, you can replace it a lot easier. A year down the line they will get even cheaper.

There was a good article I read about this. It basically said that the factory navs are so expensive because they are made to last the lifetime of a car... about 15 years. Basically as soon as it is released it is outdated and it's hard to update the software.
