I was thinking about getting an aftermarket oil cooler that ill mount in front of my radiator and run lines from the oil feed into it, then to the turbo but im wondering if its worth it. How well does and oil cooler help the engine and the turbo...?

an aftermarket oil cooler or oil cooler in general is always good. with custom line u can mount it pretty much anywhere u want to. I'm in the process of put A 88RX7 TII oil cooler in mycar. It's a pretty big cooler, that originally mount in front of the radiator on the Rx7.(FC) If u ask what does it do to the Engine and turbo??? well 1st u have to think? what is oil??? what is it purpose in ur engine??just my .02 C

In some cases an oil cooler can be a bad addition (mainly in NA cars). Oil has an optimum operating temperature range and your job in selecting an oil cooler and its position, would be to find out what you require. You don't want to cool the oil down too much and take it out of its temperature range. I'm sure that on a turbo car it would be great to have and if you are serious about it then take the time to reply back and i'll take the time to look up some oil cooler tech stuff for you :)

I've got a 10 row x 225mm wide cooler mounted in my wing (your driver side) and a thermostatic sandwich plate, which prevents overcooling.

10 row is perhaps a bit small, when I initially fitted it it wasn't much use but I've made ducting (using the stock IC ducting which you wont get on the 240) and it seems pretty damn good now.I would recommend going for a 19row job and sorting ducting out though.

my kit...

where did you get the 3/4-16 sandwich adapter for the CA with a thermostat??

i found the sandwich adapter made by flex-a-lite for about $24 on most car part places. but no thermostat...

your set up looks similar to mine.

ok found this:

http://www.batinc.net/files/sp1t.pdf

looks like you got the one that retains the use of the stock OE heat exchanger? not that you have the same brand, but i see that you have the water inlet for the heat exchanger, is that the case?

what brand you got?

thanks

I don't know what the MOCAL part number is though, they should. :(

The entire kit was ~ £110 UK

Ok, well i was thinking of getting a cooler thats roughly 12" x 6". I didnt know the row count was that important just the general size. And i have to find one that has AN or NPT fittings instead of rubber hose because if its running by the turbo its going to get hot and i dont want to start melting hose. I was only planning on spending about $50 and get some extra hoses for it when i order to hook up my turbo oil lines. Also, what are these sandwhich adapter things.. remote oil filters? If you do a remote oil filter, do i just run a line out of the old oil filter tube to the rest of the system.

the two types of sandwich adapters allows you to either run a relocatred oil filter or one that screws to the adapter plate, the adapter plate also has two AN or Pop type fittings (one in one out) to allow you to run either steel braided lines or regular oil lines to an external cooler located wherever you want.

the thermostatic adapter plates allow you to let the oil heat up to optimum operating temps and then opens the thermostat to regulate the temp. really cool stuff, there are also inline thermostatsm but i just think thats more places to get leaks. the MOCAL sandwich adapter plate 3/4-16 is the way to go along with steel lines and a 10 row 225mm cooler like Jezz is using..

if you are on a budget, i see that Flex-A-Lite makes one (part number 3961 - 3/4-16 oil filter adapter sandwich plate) that retails for about $25, and you can get a 10 row oil cooler from a junk yard or a buy B&M or other brand one, but a thermostat is really needed, so a cheaper in-line $30 one can be found easily...

so i need a Oil thermostat, Cheap oil cooler, and the sandwhich plate... but what is the need of the sandwhich plate... just so i can run more stuff through the oil system because i was just going to use the turbo oil feed port on the exhaust side of the block to run the cooler...

you need the sandwich plate to run an oil cooler, it bolts/screws to the block and has the fittings to run lines for the oil cooler,

i dont think running an oil cooler before or after the turbo will really work, where the filter is there is sufficient oil pressure there to send it through the oil cooling system.

if you have a thermostat before the turbo, when the oil has not warmed up enough it will not allow the oil to pass through the turbo, thus a dead turbo, unless you rig it to bypass the cooler and go to the turbo,

with the thermostat in the sandwich palte the oil stays in the engine untill it is warm enough, in a inline thermostat it goes back to the filter sandwich adapter and to the engine...

old post, but the one we need is the SP1T - 3/4 - 16 thread size. its $79.99 and has a built in thermostat...

now where can you find some lines? do I get them custom made locally, or is there an online retailer that does custom lines in certain lengths/fitting sizes?
