Here's what my local mechanic/tuning-guy told me,, please advise.

"here is the deal

its 100% illegal, he would really need to swap over to an h.i.d approved housing

otherwise he is liable for a $6000 per ballast fine

I do have an "in" with nissan and get him a whole setup if he wants

if he wants to do it the other way, there will be NO receipt

to do it right will be around $520 in parts, and my labor of around $150

the other way the parts are cheaper, and the labor is a little cheaper as well.

Basically, you need to get an Approved Nissan Housing, along with the parts to be legal in the US. Just like I had to with the GTI and why it was so expensive. "

So I did some research on my own post and I learned that essentially all aftermarket HIDs are illegal. They are only legal if a person also has the OEM casing installed as well, which can triple the price of the parts.

That being said, I don't know if this law is ever enforced. Opinions?

First off, Sorry we missed your thread Yes, aftermarket HID kits have been deemed illegal for some time now unless they are in a DOT approved unit.

I think its enforced in some areas, some more, some less. It may depend on your location. Cops around here don't just pull you over for seeing these lights on your car, thats quite unreasonable. Chances are you wont have a problem if you install a set.

When you get it installed, just make sure you don't aim them too high so you don't attract attention from the cops. Also, don't get an HID that's too blue, that can be considered inpersonating a cop so it's an attention getter as well.

Like stated before, aftermarket HID's are illegal. I believe only factory installed, self-adjusting HID's are legal. Maybe not necessarily self-adjusting but that's what i heard last.

The Altima's come with HID's as an option. I'm planning on ordering a 4300K set, which is basically white; the color you see on Infinti's, Lexus', BMW, etc. I'm pretty sure if you get true white 4300K bulbs, you won't get hassled. If you get pulled over, just tell the cop it's a factory installed option. Well at least that's what I'm planning on doing.
