Aftermarket Electronic Remote Car Starter Install ??

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

More of a question for EX owners in colder climates. Does anyone have any experience getting a remote car starter installed on thier EX35 ? I called the dealership and they said it is fine to take your car to an installer you trust to get it done, as the dealership said they do not do remote starter installs. I found an aftermarket car stereo installer that has not done an Infiniti, but they have done several Nissan Altima's with the keyless entry. They double checked the unit suppliers, web tech section and the part kit for the EX35 is the same as the Altima. Any tips or recomendations?

Hi, there is already a thread out there have lot’s good write-up about this topic. To sums it up you has to place your current remote fob inside the car to setup the remote car starter. Also, there is a potential ware on the starter. Based on the above two points it put a hold on my plans. Even the starter can be failure prematurely but have to leave your OEM key fob in the car is not a smart idea! Only my 2 penny!

I wouldn't really recommend a remote car starter for any car.

Contrary to popular belief, it's best to only idle your car for 1-minute (which is about how long it takes for the idle rpm to drop to a normal level of about 800 rpm).

Then you're supposed to drive it at very low rpm until the engine gets up to temperature.

When you idle the car for very long, your car takes a VERY long time to get warm inside because it uses engine heat to heat the inside. At idle, your engine takes much longer to heat up.

Also, your oil is thicker when cold and the fact that the engine is idling doesn't create enough pressure in the engine to get the engine oil into all the tight crevices in the engine. As a result, over idling while cold causes those tight crevices to see extra wear.

Also, when idling while cold, the catalytic converter doesn't get a chance to heat up and thus emissions are worse.

Did I forget to mention that it also wastes gas and is bad for the environment?

If you really don't like a cold car (because I like the car nice and toasty too). Just put the seat warmers on high, press mode to get the air to go to the front and feet and then drive the car. In less than 5-minutes, the car will be VERY toasty. I like my car to feel like a sauna in the winter when it's -20 deg. C below zero.

When i bought my EX35 i had the dealer throw in a remote start. They hooked it up to the factory fobs and everything works great. that's odd that your dealer won't install it for you?

You're confirming then, that your remote start works without leaving the key fob in the vehicle?

yes David, I confirm that I don't have to leave the keyfob in the vehicle to use the remote start, however my remote start was installed by the dealer on the original keyfob. I simply press the lock button on the keyfob twice and it starts. I would assume any aftermarket remote start system installed in this vehicle might require you to leave the keyfob in the vehicle for it to start.

RollerEx35.. you actually have an aftermarket remote start that is activated by a double pulse from the lock ...

most generally referred to as a aftermarket remote start with oem key fob integration.

Only difference is this type of install is limited by the range of the oem key fob which is usually far less then a typical aftermarket key fob.

With newer vehicles is has become very common to do this

Punjab you are correct, thanks for clearing that up for me. The range isn't great at all and I was warned of this but I wasn't looking for range at all, I just didnt want to carry around 2 different keyfob's

I was thinking about this today. I assume that if the car is started remotely, anyone getting in the car can drive it away?

If so, can it be hooked up so that the ignition is killed when pressing the brake pedal (required to disengage the shift interlock) without the presence of the key fob inside the vehicle?

This way, if anyone gained entry into the vehicle when it has been remotely started, they would not be able to drive it away, since he would have to press the brake pedal in order to shift out of park. Doing so would send a signal to kill the engine (since the key fob was not detected).

I'm assuming that if you remotely start your vehicle, and someone (even if unlikely) steals it... the owner can be held liable and responsible for any damage that is later caused by that vehicle.

Any opinions? Or does this already exist? Or does it already function like that?

The way the dealer set mine up was the ignition is killed if you press the brake pedal. To start the vehicle after using the remote start it requires the presence of the keyfob...you must hit the start button twice without hitting the brake.

Sounds good! Cant drive it away without depressing the brake pedal to shift out of park!

without the presence of a key wouldnt you not be able to turn the wheel b/c the steering wheel is still locked? Heres one for you, put your car in 'N'. Start the car with your remote, and then just slide it into 'D'. W/o the brake. huh wow.
