I have a question in regards to installing aftermarket Brake Pads. The OEM brake pads installed have shims that need to be removed during installation of the new pads correct? What if you are using aftermarket pads. Do you use the shims that you just removed and use them on the new pads or do you just install without the OEM shims? I'll be doing my first brake job either this weekend or sometime next week. Any answers would be wonderful. Thanks in advance

Shims are individually TUNED [over wide temperature range] to match oem pads, but they are better than nothing with aftermarket pads.

Wolverine makes the shims for about half the cars sold in US so this site should explain how acoustic noise reduction works on pads:http://www.wolverine.cn/files/pdf/shim.pdf

I think you just confused me more then anything

I just need to know if i need to install the OEM shims on the new pads I bought which are not OEM or do the new pads have the shims already built on and use it that way ( I ordered the pads and haven't received them)

Yes reuse the stainless shim. It will keep the pad from a rattle and help with noise.

Just to be clear. There are to pieces on each side. The inner shim and the inner shim cover. Are you saying use reuse both?

Thanks

Be sure to lube them using a high quality grease. Use the factory shims they will make a difference, even the cheapest aftermarket pads usually have a backing plate that corresponds to the tabs on the pads.

The noise frustrates enough people that the majority of noise complaints I see (involving aftermarket pads) usually ends up with the purchase of a new shim kit to resolve this issue. A little extra time in doing this procedure will yield much better results in the long run.

A freshly cut non directional finish on the brake rotor face will also make a big difference in feel and ensure proper burnishing operation.
