Aftermarket backup / reverse camera

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

My wonderful 08 RWD came with Bose but not the reverse camera or navigation. After reading various forums, I see that these aftermarket units have improved in quality and come down in price. Since our EX's have an LCD monitor with the video imput jacks easily accessible, I really want to install one in mine. I have had one in both mine and my wife's cars now for over 5 yrs and I guess I liked them more than I thought I did!

So - my questions are have any of you installed an aftermarket camera and hooked it up to your monitor?
Has anyone tried the wireless models? (they look relatively simple)

These can all be had for $30-$75 (USD) easily and you can mount them directly on the license plate, so I figure it is worth a try. I would just love to know if anyone has done this and if you went wireless or if you routed wires through your car.

Thanks!

I have an aftermarket backup camera installed on my 08 altima coupe, I would advise you to stay away from the license plate mounted ones. The picture quality is ok in the daytime, but is severely lacking at night. I am considering replacing the one I have for that reason.

Thanks for the info!
Does yours have either the LEDs or the infrared? It does look like there are a few types available. Some with no lights, some with either infrared or white LEDs.
Did you wire yours to your stock monitor and power it from the reverse light?

Very much appreciate your help!

Mine has LED's around it, I assume they are infared because I've never seen them lit up, but they don't really do much to light up whatever is behind the car. The reverse lights do that better than the led's around the camera do. It is connected to my reverse light lead which activate the camera and switch the monitor to that function. I am using a JVC KW-NT3HDT as the head unit. if there is an object behind the car I can usually see that at night, but if nothing is there it appears mostly black.

Thanks again for the info. Was it difficult for you to route the wiring from the hatch to the front?

Has anyone done this and routed the wires to the jacks in the console?

Has anyone done this with the wireless units?

I can't really tell you, I paid someone to run the wire for me.

I am leaning towards a cheap wireless version... $30 or so no drilling with simple connections (usb)...worth a shot!

My wireless camera should be here any day. Small camera (NOT license plate mounted)
Drill two holes for the camera, route the power wires to the reverse lights and bring the transmitter inside the hatch somewhere discrete. Plug the receiver into the power socket plug and Video jack both into the console storage and "hopefully' Voila!

A whopping $28 shipped from Hong Kong.

OK - it arrived, and it is small... Happy about that.
The video output from the wireless receiver is much smaller than the RCA jack we have in our console... So I am cutting those wires and connecting them to a RCA jack. Before I instal the camera, I will make sure it works by just testing it up front with the transmitter wires touching the battery. I am starting to think that this is NOT going to work for me unless I have the parking brake sensor bypass done, and maybe even the speed sensor too? If that is the case, I am very bummed about it! I don't want to take appart my dash at all... (fear)
Has anyone done that parking brake bypass mod here so they can watch their portable DVD on the stock screen? Was that easier or harder to do than you anticipated?

Thanks again

OK - installed it. It works. Yeah!

BUT I do still need to do the parking brake and speed sensor bypass... bummer.

I took some pics, but it looks like I need to upload them somewhere else first, not directly here...so gimme a bit to set that up next.

Sorry for bumping up an old thread.
Just got an 08 EX35 without camera, really want to get one installed.
Could anyone share some info where to buy the cam and module?

Thanks!
