I was hearing a bad taping on top of the motor. So I Took it to a shop to get the valves adjusted. I got the car back the same day but it seemed worse. The tapping was louder. and the idle was jumping form 700 rpms to 500 rpms. Also the if you push the gas so the rpms are high and let it drop, it would drop down to 0 rpms but not die. I too k the car back told them that not only is the tapping still there but not the cars idle isn't constant. they said that they should be able to fix it right away, so to wait. ended up leaving and not getting the car back 8 hours later. Problem still not fixed. but now the rpms are at 900 at idle ( drops sometimes)and it putters like its missing a spark or fuel injector, But i checked those. and the tapping still there. The shop that did the work say that the valves are adjust to spec. so they don't know what the problem could be. has anyone else have this problem after adjusting their values. thanks for the advice.

oh later after i got my car back they call up to see,if the guy that worked on my car, keys under the hood. and guess what they were so meet them half way for that as well.

the de head uses shims and oil pressure to keep the valves adjusted. the shims from the factory are sized according to the clearance between the cam lobe and the lifter. since the shims will slowly(very slowly on well maintained motors, faster on abused ones) wear away over time oil pressure maintains proper specs. so to adjust the valves, the appropriate sized shims would be needed and the old ones removed.

so ask them to show you the old shims they removed. if they actually adjusted it. sounds like they obviously messed up the timing, check under the valve cover to see what else is wrong.. check your cam lobes as well as it is quite easy to scratch the lobes when changing shims.

i'm done
