after market tach on sr question

atfer all this time trying to figure out my tach problem im just gonna get a ftermarket one ftw. since the sr has coil packs iwould i have to get that msd box? The reason im askinging this is because ive heard that u can use the tachs w/o the box by wiring the tach signal up to the positive wire on one of teh coil packs? is that true
