It's hard to say what the previous owner of your car did to the wiring.. take out the back seat and rear interior panels and check it out... They might be disconnected.. There might be a small amplifier installed back there.. but most likely not.

Check it out and let us know.

It's just too hard to guess at what is going on without you doing some investigation first.

I have searched for a DIY on removing rear seat back & side panels... Does one exist?? RSC is a no brainer, but not sure how big a job the RSB & side panels are...

The later-model 240SXes, none of which came as convertibles, had factory amplifiers- one for the front speakers and tweeters and another for the rear speakers.

I bet the audio tech was thinking about these newer cars.

On my S14 these amplifiers failed- they started cutting out on hot days and eventually died altogether. This actually wasn't a problem because I had already gone to an aftermarket headunit and I think they were causing a loss of signal quality and it was impossible to play the radio quietly.

Last night I installed a CD player in my convertible and I didn't have any problems- although I think the stock speakers could all do with a replacement at this point they were at least working.

Things to check:

-Sony stereo setting, make sure the radio is not faded all the way towards the front, or "front imaging" is turned on-Rear speakers are connected-Rear speakers are functional-Rear speaker wiring is not messed up/amplified-Harness connections at the stereo head unit were done correctly

As a last resort, you could run new wires from the head unit back to the speakers.
