i am wondering if anyone has come up with a method to cover up the nav unit with some sort of fake faceplate lol

or any ideas of what i should do to be able to hide my nav unit well?

thanks

ps. i have also posted this in the altima audio forum but hoping more people can see it here...sorry for the double post

it might be just a bit difficult. you would have to think of something original ive never seen it done on the altima but im sure its possible. most likely will have to try to fab something yourself

the navi I have (and selling below) has a detachable screen. Other than that there's no real way to prevent it. Tinting doesn't always work, people here break into cars just because they're tinted (assuming somethings inside).

well, I would suggest a 9mm or 40 caliber for nav-screen protection, but you're in Canada... sooo.... I dunno, a big knife maybe

seriously, I have seen face faceplates before... just a faceplate of a tape deck molded over the nav unit, that caneasily be put on of taken off

Put razor blades all around the inside behind the nav unit and under the air vents. When they go to grab it, CUT CUT CUT. Then you still have your nav unit and DNA from them to prove they tried to steal it?

I dunno lol

This is what I have...

You can cut the trim around the fake panel a little more to make it fit better. You won't need to turn the knob for the suction cup 'cause the panel sits on top of the z110bt without falling down.

I've seen something like this before when I used to visit maxima.org

The guy basically took his (then useless) stock stereo, ripped out the front plate and used it as a decoy. I thought it was pretty smart, but it's not really possible with our cars. I quickly looked around ebay and you can find the same thing for $15 if you're interested.

Posted this in A/V area but I will post again since there is very little traffic in that section.

I have thought about buying these.......

I would also look into insurance. If you have full coverage your stereo might be covered. If not getting extra coverage for your stereo would probably be really cheap.

That's a good idea iammai, but I think it's smarter for those thiefs to look in the car and see the decoy instead of breaking the window, ripping the crap outta the dash board to find those security screws. It's just way to much damage and money for those thiefs to see the DVD/NAV to want to steal it. I think the decoy that's seen on ebay is a better idea. Much respects to your idea though .

thanks for the great ideas guys!

right now i am looking at the ebay faceplate

i might end up gettin that decoy, but then again smart theives will know its a decoy......

here is another interesting option i found, http://www.dummyface.com/but i think the ebay one looks a lot more realistic lol

like one of you suggested, i am also thinking about taking a stock radio and see if i can play with it to make a fake faceplate...but it'll be really hard with the way our radio is set up

I think the decoy is better, these keys are worthless because when thieves go in there to jack your unit, they aint trying to unscrew anything, they are gonna take a giant screwdriver, and jam it behind the unit, and rip the whole thing out... that's what the guy did that broke into my car until I ran up on him with the 9 mili and scared the $hit out of him when I fired at him...

trust me, the decoy is a much better alternative, these screws are usless unfortunately... the gator grip screwdriver can open these with no problem!!!

texas has very gun friendly laws... as per Texas penal code PC 46.02, PC 46.15 even if you DON'T have a concealed carry license, you can carry a loaded concealed gun in your vehicle, on the way to your vehicle, while you are in your vehicle, and while you are leaving your vehicle as long as (1) the gun must be concealed; (2) the carrier cannot be involved in criminal activities; and (3) the carrier cannot be a member of a criminal gang.... if you DO have a concealed weapons license (which is VERY easy to get in texas) then you're good to go on about everyday business with your weapon concealed... so yeah, in Texas its always OK to carry a handgun in your glove compartment...

I have a 31 state concealed carry weapons license and I ALWAYS have my gun on me if I'm in one of those states!

The fake faceplate would never work for me. I would not deal with the hassle of putting it on/off daily after the first week.

I got the idea of the fasteners from another forum. Here is the rest of the post...

Insurance:My insurance company offers "audio coverage" for my auto policy. So i simply asked for 1000 bucks in audio coverage. it was an extra 55 bucks a year!! for BOTH cars with double din's.... so thats not bad.

I printed all my online receipts i could find for the unit and all its accessories i purchased from ebay/amazon/etc.... along with items i didnt have receipts for i provided pictures of the units and the units serial numbers/model numbers - close up pics. I expressed my concern for my agent verify with claims underwritting in making sure the pictures were acceptable. They agreed and wrote me back and email stating this, so i kept it saved/printed for my records just in case.

Back strapping:

This is hard to do - well depending on the vehicle. In both vehicles i back strapped the heck out of the double din nav unit. I purchased sheet metal strap - the thickest i could find and ran it to the dash MAIN/SOLID/STEEL structure in the dash. Its hard to do, because you ultimately want the shortest length possible with zero slack and you are best to drill and mount the strap into the steel structure of the dash using self tapping sheet metal screws. - this is usually quite difficult with the confined space of most dashes and limited access, but i have usually done it successfully on most vehicles - time usually takes me over an hour to successfully do so as well.......

Its found usually in the HVAC/air conditioning sections of home depot/etc:

Security Fasteners:

Now i have this last only because the Z double din head units screw into plastic center dash structure, some vehicles have metal mounting plates and security fasteners will really help, but in the Z i say - it doesn't hurt, but i wouldn't rely solely on it, because i think any thief would just yank and break the double din unit free from the plastic center dash and press on, or take the entire thing with them...

Security Fasteners usually have funny heads and special keys to remove:

Pager alarm:

Alarm system with two way pager so you can run out there and beat some a z z ......

**These are in no particular order

Pager alarm - great idea... I have one

Extra Audio Insurance - great idea, i have an extra $6,000 coverage for my audio system with geico... only cost me like an extra $100 per year

Back strapping- great idea, I have it ...done on my dvd player in the storage bin, near impossible for the Nav unit due to all of the wires behind there

Sorry to be off topic, but are you getting a shop to install it for you? If so, maybe I can help you do it for cheaper. I installed a Nav unit in my own car no problem.
