Hello all. New member, first post.
My gal got me the top of the line Magellan Maestro GPS system for Xmas. I have come with an inexpensive and very easy way to install the unit into the top console compartment in my '06 G35 6MT. I am basically putting it into the same area where the factory GPS screen would rise out of the console.
It has occurred to me that the factory one, had I gotten one, probably requires TWO power sources to make A) the screen rise out of the console and B) to get the DVD system in the secondary glove box to power on.
Question 1: Is there a power source behind the console or as part of the stereo system that I can tap into? If so, then I would simply run the power cables through the bottom of that top console directly into it. However, I realize if this is possible I will also need an appropriate type of power cable that leads from the power source to the magellan....might even have to come up with appropriate adapters or make some custom ones.
Anyone have an experience or knowledge if this is possible and where I might look for the appropriate accessories?
Question 2: Even if #1 isn't an option, I still want to hook up an external antenna with the "fin" type antenna that sits on the roof by the rear window. I then want the antenna wire to run into that same top console panel (described above) where I intend on installing the unit.
All of this is for aesthetics and cleanliness. I don't want wires running everywhere nor do I want the Magellean dangling off of my front windsheild with that stupid looking sucker window mount. My solution, if it can all work out, will allow to to close that top console lid and hide the unit when parked or not in use so its not displayed to would be thiefs passing by my car.
I am not much of a car guy....as far as 'doing it myself' is concerned...if its possible and easy then I will. But if requires $$$ to get it installed professionally then so be it. Just need to know if what I am trying to do is possible.
Thanks.
