This thing is amazing, first of all. Second, where the hell can you get one?

I have seen there system for the Harley Davidsons before. Actually considered it back when I bought my HD-P.O.S.

It is VATN.

Variable Area Turbine Nozzle.

It doesn't have trim. It is every trim possible; The most optimal trim possible at every flow rate given a fixed A/R.

Incredible turbine efficiency. Normal "T" level compressor efficiencies. If you could combine this with a GT-Ballistics compressor it would be awe striking. Unfortunately you can't, but if you could.....

i wonder how long it would hold up before it blows itself up.

Actually, the trim is fixed. It's the nozzle or A/R that changes. Corky Bell touches on this turbo in Maximum Boost(to kind of promote his own product). It's a great concept, but yet to be perfected for use in high turbo applications. It requires no wastegate as it controls boost my varying the nozzle. Not exactly ideal in my book for High HP since all the air is still forced through the turbine meaning the nozzle would have to restrict the motor to limit boost, where as a standard design will bypass air to limit boost. The other advantage is that it combines quicjk response with relatively good flow. But this definitely would not be my first choice.

yeah i read about it in Maximum Boost too .. looks great for lower airflow / HP applications though ... wonder how much one of those would set you back

You are absolutely correct C-Kwik, thanks for the correction.

Actually, I had the pleasure to drive a 1.6L Miata with an Aerocharger running 7psi. It was FANTASTIC. The absolute best boost response and power curve I've ever felt in a turbo car.

I would not hesitate to put one on an SR.

I originally thought the same thing you did at one time. Since I have only seen them in books, and usually only diagrams at that, so it was hard to picture until someone else explained it to me. The term Variable Area Turbine Nozzle made a lot more sense after that. :)

Did it have a wastegate or was boost controlled by this so-called "nozzle"-thingy? I really want to know more about this! :ylsuper

J-Spec, do a search on Yahoo! or Google for "VATN Turbo" and you should be able to find lots of info.

It really is an ingenious device. It already failed, however. All the automakers had concerns over the number of moving parts (the reliability of any system is equal to the product of the reliability of its parts). We all know automakers in the US have generally moved away from the use of turbos.

It requires no wastegate. The vanes that control the airflow are sufficient enough to control boost. But as I've said, it's not the best way to make power considering that it's like using a restricor in the turbine to limit boost. The wastegate is the better option as it will lower the backpressure and combustion temperatures.
