It's rear wheel drive, and a drifting legend in Japan. The AE86 is the star of the infamous "Initial D" racing cartoons.

Ichi = 1Go = 5

Ichi-Go sounds like Strawberry, hence Strawberry face Conversion. S15. : )

1985 - 1987 toyota corolla. came to the united states as the gts and sr5. sr5 has weaker axles, engine, and no lsd. you swap between the two to end up with a gts. 50 / 50 weight distribution or damn close. engine wise 4ag, 4agze, 20valve. paradise racing has a 3tc powered ae86. the last rear wheel drive corolla and before they turned to mom friendly cars. while being so well known they sell for alot and becoming harder to find in japan. some gone for as much as 11k on yahoo japan. popular tuners for this have been techno pro spirit. http://www.club4ag.com for more information about this car and older toyotas.

Some cars that look the same are the celica hb's from the 80's, supra's from the 80's and accords from the 80's. I see these cars all day long but seeing a hb AE86 GTS is very rare, ive seen 2 in the last 8 months where i live. The knotchbacks are alot more common around here since I saw three yesterday.

Well as the previous owner of an '86 AE86 (UK-spec "GT Coupe Twin Cam 16V") before the current '95 240SX SE that I own, I can say that I actually preferred driving the Toyota overall. (More fun)

The Nissan has a more solid feel to it in fairness, however, the AE86 in standard trim (UK version anyway - which mine was) does 0-60mph in 7.8 secs. I had 133mph out of it easily too - other friends had 140mph (the FWD version AE82) in standard tune too :)

Thats actually faster than the UK-spec 200SX (Turbo) which does that in 8.0 secs....according to information I've read. I'm sure the 200SX will be a much faster car overall though.

When I moved to Hong Kong I was expecting to pick up a supercharged Jap-spec version - the price they were asking for those things over there was crazy (maybe not compared to what people pay here though ;) )

In the UK I'm sure the AE86 was available from 1984 upto 1988, however I think that '87 was the last year of it being a new model.

The car that I bought took me 9 months to find. When I sold it I had over separate 36 enquiries and the first guy that saw it bought it. He came from Ireland for it!!! Told me that in his town everybody owned them. Said there were some 20-30 in his small town alone.

It really is a cult car - you don't realise this until you buy one. I even had people stop at the house and offer cash for the car.

there was a car cruising around last night that had a bunch of emblems on it...(ae86 gts sprinter trueno gt-apex) some crap like that, but i was sceptical that it was a real ae86. i doubt there'd be one in nebraska. plus the backend looked a little rounded, and i don't even think they had pop-up headlights.

Not sure is this will work or not

I had the black on black version of this car.

That one would cost ya US$2700 if you responded to the guys advert in the UK autotrader ;)

seriously though, why would you want an ae86? i mean, aren't they pretty pathetic power wise?

"It really is a cult car" and great platform to build on. I'd love to have one actually... I just dont like the interiors... a little too old-school for me.

like everyone else said its a cult car, maybe even legendary. its pathetic power wise but no one drag races an ae86 except some of the puerto ricans and paradise racing. a bad bad reference would be initial d. LOL i cant believe i said that. it beats those powerful cars by skill not by brute force. 99.9% of people by this car to drift. you can make it alot faster. you can build up the 4ag by turboing it or hi-comp. you can swap in a 20v which will set you at around 140hp. you can drop in the 4agze which is supercharged. if you are daring you can twin charge it. there have been 3sgte installs, rotary, SR20DET!!, dsm, etc. it is a great platform to learn on and once you outgrow the car you will be able to taken virtually any car.

alot of things are pretty pathetic power wise...take the ka. the toyota 3tc motor makes about 80 hp. that is pretty patheric power wise. however it is a favourite with puertro ricans and have been made into 9,10,11,12,etc. cars reliably and alot daily driven. you can easily get 200hp NA from that.

if i had the chance i would get an older corolla, TE series, for a drag car and an AE86 for drift. they are really turning into fix-up cars. the majority of clean and good 86s left are restored ones from other tuners unless you get really lucky. you might buy this car cheap but to get it running properly and restored will cost you $$$. that is a big reason of why it is a cult car you put so much into it.

I've owned 2 of them, and I live in Lincoln. My brother owns a white AE-92 GT-S also. What color was the one you saw? I know of several in Lincoln and one in Omaha. A friend owns my old red 85 hatchback, and it has the J-spec Trueno emblems on it.

They are really cool cars, but they are not very fast.

My brother is considering doing a 4A-GZE swap into his AE-92. Basically it is a supercharged version of the standard 4A-GE. The AE-92 is, regretably, front wheel drive however.

I have my eyes on a clean white 86 GT-S however, may have to get it in the spring after I sell my 280Z...
