Been going through all the exhaust posts and found that Magnaflow and Flowmaster are the two main mufflers choices for our PFers. What I am looking for is to stay as quiet as possible but wanting a more free flowing muffler. Both of the choices dont look very good for keeping things quiet. Seems like most people are cutting off the rear silencer by the bumper with their new setups. I was wondering if I just only swapped mufflers to the magnaflow and keep the rear silencer if that would keep things a little quieter then without that rear silencer.

What is in that rear silencer anyways. Is it very restrictive by itself. If it is restrictive how about just keeping all the stock setup and just getting rid of it and doing a nice stainless steel tip curving out the side to make the overall appearance from the back of the truck look better. My PF is black on black with the platinum coated wheels on the 04 LE's. Seeing that big silver can from the back does not look too good either.

I looked into Gipson mufflers. I had one on an old Expedition that I really liked and was as quiet as stock but was more free flowing. I could tell it had effect bc it would not have to downshift up hills as much then before. But the only one that looks like will work is a dual 2.25 in with a single 3" out. That would mean doing all new piping from there back as well. Between the additional labor for that and the additional cost of the muffler ($170 for gibson vs $99 for Magnaflow)it would cost a lot more as well.

Any imput?

doing a 2.25 - 2.5 out doesnt hurt either.. if you want quiet, change just the muffler. leave the resonators. should be just fine. resonators "deaden" the noise. you get the big oval muffler, and the "silver can" you see is what we call a post muffler tip... basically its like a pretend muffler....

I know I got very little response on this but anyways, I will try again. Went to two different muffler shops today to get opinions (both have good reputations).

The first shop said he would do a Magnaflow 11225 (2.25 single in and 2.225 single out) and use a Y. The second option he gave me if I wanted it more quiet was 2 Cherry Bombs T904, one to replace muffler and other to replace the rear resonator by bumper.

The second shop said he would do a Magnaflow 125980 (dual 2.25 in and single 2.5 out, it is 8" longer than the Magnaflow 11225).

Can someone with any muffle knowledge help me out on which would be the best set up to keep things a little quieter but give the best performance (I know those two terms clash but there has to be a good balance).

Shop #1 for the Magnaflow 11225 was $184. The two Cherrybombs option was $226 because it requires more materials to do.
Shop #2 for the Maganflow 125980 was right at $200.

I prefer one of the Magnaflow routes because they are stainless over the aluminized of the Cherrybombs and a little cheaper. Plus don't know much about the Cherrybombs and how free flowing everything would be if two of them were put on. I can save about $20 on top of those prices if I got my own Magnaflow off of Amazon and just paid them for mainly the labor and the little amount of materials.

The guy at the first shop (who has been there for 25 years) said something to the fact that the dual in and single out actually has less sound dampening then a single all the way through. He said it has to do with the way the dual pipes combine into one inside the muffler causing it to have less packing. I have no idea if that is true or not.

So why would you vote for the two Cherrybombs option?

Look at this thread...

he replaced the oval resonator I think...still noisy...so I figured your option would 2x muffle...if not the magnaflow 2 in 1 out is what some people do here (and what I would want to do to mine coz its rusted out) then maybe put a glass pack near the tip...oops they are magnaflows sorry for that

if your going for cheaper...ebay has this Seller that has Made In USA cherry bomb clones which are to me a cheaper alt...then just worry about the noise once the job is done...glasspacks are cheap anyways
