i know this isnt really a ka-t question, but its the only place i really check so give me a break, please

im fed up with getting screwed over by this obd2 inspection stuff. im thinking about trying to re-title my car as obd1. do you guys think the average shop would know the difference between an s13 and an s14? im probably going to be driving it under 3k a year, and not being perfectly legit doesnt really bother me. most chassis w/ clean titles are s13's, so its looking much easier to go that way.

thanks,marc

what exactly are you asking?

can you get an OBDII car titled as an OBDI? Just off the top of my head I'd say no.

why would you want to change back to obd1?, as far as i know 96 and up aren't put on a roller to check for emissions, so you'd pass as long as there's no ecu codes on.(and the usual safety check)

that is unless your city does emissions.......

ill try to explain my situation.im getting rid of all the emissions stuff and its running on the aem ems. so i no longer have an obd2 port to scan.what i was trying to do was....pick up a chassis w/ a clean title. and pretty much swap some VINS and then make my car that one. i know this probably isnt very legal, but essentially its the same as swapping all my stuff over to that chassis, but without all the work.

i would then insure my car under that title, and all would be well. just wondering if i take it to get inspected...will they see 92 240sx (for example) and know something is up?

if you change VIN ##'s and they find out, you'll probably end up in jail with the cops thinkin you stole the car(there is such thing as thieves changing VIN numbers on stolen cars to make'em look normal), the VIN tells which chasis it is i believe.

well i would own the titles to both cars, so i should be ok there. i would probably pull the VIN plates from the dash and bay and swap them.

Changing a car's VIN is a pretty serious offense. More serious, I'd say, than finding some other way to defraud the emissions system.

There are other ways this can be done, Id avoid the major offenses if possible.

I say go for it, if they start to question you, just pay them some cash or take it someplace els. most places dont care enough to look into things like that, they just want to get it in and out and move on, to make more money.

if i could think of other ways to do this, i would definately try them. this is pretty much my last resort.

im looking into registering it as a show/custom car. i know theres a limited mileage clause in it, but i cant see myself putting more than 3k a year on it anyway. im just trying to figure out if it lets my get by the emissions stuff.

man, this sucks. i just want to drive the damn thing for fun every now and then.

Do you want to be known as the guy that messed around with his car til it somehow passed emissions, then put it back to how it was later, only to do it again in 2 years?OR...Do you want to be known as the BAD-*** that tricked everyone and stuck it to the man!

go for it!

I doubt the feds or state will be very happy with this if you should get caught.

Keep in mind, it is not OBDII that is screwing you over. It was your choice to mod the car to this point. Driving your car on public roads is a priveledge, not a right. The government is not the enemy here. If we could drive super clean cars without any OBD systems, then I'm sure there would never have been a need for such things. But alas, even on LEV and better emissions systems, people still fail to properly maintain their cars and end up adding to the smog issues.

I'm not going to preach the ins and outs of laws with you. You're old enough to know right from wrong. And I'd be a hypocrite to say not to do anything. But I would consider the consequences. And I'd certainly choose to find someone who will "pass" your car before Vin switching. They would know they are breaking the law too and would do more to cover their own *** should something go wrong. Do a Vin switch and try to pass it though and you get someone who is an honest businessman who detects what you've done and you may be staring the government in the face with a witness to validate their case.

^Dont listen to PAPASMURF, if you do this, you wont be known as a bad-a$$, youll just be known as an a$$.....Just find some ghetto smog shop, and bargain with them to smog it, mostlikely theyll do it, if not just go somewhere else...
