Advice on purchasing a KA24DE

Hey guys. Bare with me here, this is hard to explain.

I'm putting a ka24de into my 90 240sx. Long story short, I'm going to rebuild the ka24de completely when I get it. So here's my question. What should I be looking for in an engiine? I don't want to pay the 400-700 dollars it will take to buy a good running engine when all I'm going to do is tear it apart. On the other hand, I'm affraid of what I might get in an engine that isn't working. What do I have to worry about? What should I watch for?

FYI...I'll also be picking up the other stuff I need like power steering lines, resevoir, ECU, etc.
