Advice says stay under 4000 RPM til 1200 miles completed. I know to vary freeway cruising speed until that time but hard to resist a bit of performance testing. One of the Infiniti crew said 600-800 miles is fine. What's the consenus here?

BTW--last two cars were 2004 Audi 2.7t S-line and 1999 BMW 740i Sport. This M45 Sport surpasses both, closet to the 740i in feel and flatness in turns. Excellent coachwork, attractive color combos, especially attractive lighting for evening/night driving. Road noise and roughness not as predicted with 19inch rubber, sport suspension tweaks--handles well and not as rough nor loud as the Audi. Electronics/interface excellent and intuitive, main reason I skipped BMW offerings. Wish they had an auxillary input option since the advanced tech was no longer a 2007 option but overall quite an impressive combination of luxury and performance--at a lease payment $150-200 less per month than others in my choice set. Couldn't wait to test the new Jaguar XF but don't think I will look back or second guess.

BTW2--nice forum

I am a supporter of reasonable hard piston motion in the initial miles on an engine. You do not want to baby it ... this is where the burrs and internal left-over machining, even on the best engines, needs to be removed cleanly and the rings need to be seated well. So, the piston travel needs to be into the regions where it matters.

My local Infiniti dealer Service Rep also advised not babying the engine in the early miles.

Regardless, one of the Most important Things To Do To A New Engine: replace the oil and filter often in the first few hundred to thousands of miles is critical. Cheap way to ensure that all the "stuff" is removed from inside the engine. See my posts on oil changes for more info.

Finally, please do a search on this topic too - we have posts and links that may be eye-openers!
