I have a 1997 Maxima with approximately 175K miles on the odometer. I believe that the water pump is the original factory unit. Should this item be replaced as preventative maintenace? How prone to failure is the water pump? Thanks for any advice.

Some say you should consider replacing the water pump with each timing belt replacement. You have a timing chain that is lifetime so there goes that.

If the water pump is leaking, weeping, or making noise then it's time to replace it. Otherwise I would not worry about it unless you have some issue that may point to the pump.

Thanks for the reply- advice taken. I plan to keep the car a couple more years. With just routine maintenance it's been incredibly reliable.

If you follow maintenance schedules these cars will last a long time. Obviously there are a few exceptions.

unless its leaking (not common) dont touch it.

Mine recently sprung a very small leak and I replaced it...cost me $400

I do what my grandpa taught me about this subject
I run straight antifreeze with no water mixed in it
A lot of people disagree here but I have never overheated any of my cars I have owned
I like it because if you eliminate the water you really cut back on rust and keep those
waterpump seals "greasy"
