You should probably start by reading up on whether an x-pipe or h-pipe will best fit your needs, and whether you'll want resonators or not.

How much are you trying to spend? What are your goals? Godspeeds are well regarded as the cheaper alternative for stock piping. Z1/Ash Massives for big power and if you got the money. You'll need upgraded piping for those.

Look for a low-miles part car or scour the parts suppliers online, I found a 40K rack for a reasonable price shipped a number of years ago.
Regarding the SMIC question, Z1 has a really good price on their upgrade SMICS that are great for medium HP and even larger HP Z's, and at $495 instead of the normal price of $848...that's the route I am going whenever I have $ for that upgrade.

so i recently recovered some valve covers from a scrapped 300zx and i noticed that on the two valve covers closest to the top there are clips withing the valve covers and there are completely broken. my question is does this effect the car in anyway? is it going to be a problem when i put them on?

That's a pretty clean Z you got there, I like the black and red color scheme. As for the "clips" I figured that's what you were talking about and I have no idea what they are for, I always through that they help with ventilation of crankcase gasses. But either way I see no reason why they would negatively affect anything. Maybe someone who knows more about these mystery chunks of plastic can chime in.
