base timing? yes... you need a timing light.. point that at the crank pulley timing pin and then (after unbolting the set bolt) rotate the distribuitor counter clockwise or clockwise to retard or advance the base timing.

If you want to change timing at any other point you will need something else entirely...

Oh yea dont forget to hav your car fully warmed up first and unplug your TPS sensor before you measure your timing.

I feel like being a nice guy... here is a write up.

1. Let the engine warm up2. Disconnect TPS3. Connect timing light4. check.. if not 20+-2 BTDC adjust as shown below- loosen the bolts circled then turn it CW to advance CCW to retard5. recheck timing

That picture is missleading. If you turn it clock wise (mounting bolt is closer to the right side of where it mounts too) it retards it. If you turn it counter clock wise (mounting bolt is closer to the left side of the mounts) then its more advanced.

if your TPS is still plugged your idle will not be same as getting 700rpm idle with TPS unplugged

Also, an important part to adjusting the timing is to realize which 240 you're talking about as far as base timing goes... DOHC = ~20 ; SOHC = 15

Just to put that info out there so nobody reads this thread and happens to mess up their timing.

The TPS is around your throttle body. I think there are two connections close to it and you want to unplug the...one toward the lower left if I remember correctly. This is all off the top of my head tho, I haven't even popped the hood on my car in a month :X

Also, if you advance the timing more than the OE setting, premium fuel is mandatory.
