Rkleff's post reminded me to do this, as I was getting the hard 1-2 shift as well. I plugged in my Snap-On Brick and found my TPS to be set at .48V at hot idle. Dialed it back to .44V and viola! Nice, smooth 1-2 shift and better downshifting performance. Took about 5 minutes. If you don't have a scanner, use a voltmeter by backprobing the TPS connector.

Checked all my fluids too, and everything was full and clean but the oil, which was 1qt low. I know my right VC gasket is seeping, but not to the tune of 1qt every 2000 miles. I hope the rear main isn't leaking or worse, that I'm burning oil... :ohno:

I am thrilled to say that after 2 months, the steering rack I got for $160 on clearance from RockAuto.com is working perfectly, and the Amsoil ATF I filled it with is still perfectly red and clean and EXACTLY at the full-hot mark. :woot:

Now I just need to flush the transmission with Amsoil ATF and get the Wolf's Head Universal Synthetic crap outta there! I'm also planning on flushing the brake system with Valvoline synthetic BF in the near future.

Thanks for the TPS report - and you even remembered to use the new cover sheet! :gapteeth:

Amazing that .02V is that critical. Might be time to check mine with the laptop...

I believe you have my stapler...

I'll call your tourism board. I'll put strychnine in the guacamole...

And it was .04V, doofus! :chuckle:

Never, ever let the Q engine "to get 1 quart low" The dipstick bottom of hashmark indicates 22-23 ounces low, wise to topoff when oil mark is at 1/2 way down from full to low on dipstick hashmark, which requires 10-11 ounces to bring it back to the top.

Actually a service manager told me that in 1990, Nissan engineers came to WA state where they sat in a Q45 on a slight incline at idle. The fill level was causing some slapping a producing a rough idle. Ever since, the standard fill at that dealership was 5.5 qt. for the early VH45DE per the engineers' instructions.

I would take that with a grain of salt, at best...........with all the members here that have been posting for over 10 years who own early Q45s, I cant recall a single post complaining of the above "story" nor any TSB or mention of the issue from Nissan USA, or a revised recommended fill level or dipstick to replace the original.....have you?

Wasn't the original fill level specified at something like 6.2 quarts, and then revised downward to 6.000000000000000000 quarts according to Dennis? I know my dealership said 6qts, but I don't know that I've seen a TSB for that.

According to Alldata, the capacity w/ filter change is 6 3/8 (6.375) qts.

You're right. Interestingly enough that recommendation was still in the '96 owner's manual, but I've always just put 6 quarts in based on the recommendations at my dealership (starting in '96 when I bought my first Q) and from Dennis.

The service records for my car from when it was being serviced in California at the dealerships there actually show him being invoiced for 7 quarts. I hope they just rounded up for accounting purposes.

Shops generally do. Even though their oil is purchased in bulk, they bill as tough every quart is another bottle opened.

Yeah I always do 6 quarts and it always has the oil just on the top of the hash marks. Occasionally when i have a shop change the oil they put a little more in and I don't really like that. Besides they always put the oil filter on way too tight and it's a pain to get off.

No, it was told to me by the Service Manager who was in that position when the Q45 debuted. Good service dealership also. Aggressive on maintenance beyond the book if you let them. One of the few I ever encountered.

eye for an eye ? fight fire with fire ? get the point ? Does it really matter that despite the fact that the 1990 q45 has been on the roads for almost 22 years and despite thousands of owners filling their oil sumps with 6 quarts , we hear this nonsense just now ??????? Some things you just got to ignore, especially after all this time without hearing of imaginary issues.
