So...Im lloking for some cams. I called of course JWT. And i have heard a few things about these cams. 1) they make a ka very fun to drive as the pull to the top end easily. But, knowing the technics of how cams work, im weary.2) they are expensive(585.oo)....ill explain.
When a Cam comes with a advertised duration of 275(like jwt) or 256 (what people have said jwt's cams REALLY are), etc...they start to have alot of overlap. This is good for an n/a setup. Lots of big duration and moderate lift with overlap. Problem is, when on a turbo car, this is not optimum. More duration is good to an extent, but too much and then you have the excessive overlap, too. Big lift with no overlap(or minimal overlap is a good combination), is the best, but its pretty hard to do that. Youll alwasy have some overlap. The jwt cams do help a good bit, dont get me wrong. But anybody wonder why they dont help as much as the 272 cams do on an sr? I can tell you. 2 reasons...the sr 272 (pick your manufacturer, it doesnt matter) camshafts are designed with turbo in mind...so even though they say a big duration like 272..its more like 258-260 (or as low even as 218 (pdm)etc...these "272" and "264" cams are really just generic numbers. It all in how its measured, and most of the time they use a diff. method to get duration measurements than you do) With a big lift and less overlap. And also....CAM GEARS are readily available to retard exhaust timing to pull some of the overlap out.I spoke to brian crower at crower cams for about an hour the other night. He told me that he could work me a set of suctom cams for about xxx amount of dollar(wish i could say..but if he hooked me up, i dont want to cut my own throat
