I have an 04 Maxima with almost 100k miles on it. It makes a horable tapping noise from the engine which sounds like a loose valve tapping, and sounds like its getting worse. I am used to working on pushrod v8's and I know you can adjust valve lash on them, and I am wondering if there is any way to adjust the valves so it is not making that noise any more?

Have you been changing oil regularly? Did you ever ran low on oil?

You can try using BG Quick Clean and do multiple oil changes. You may have to do it 3 times. Just use the cheapest oil and filter you can get then go back to your regular oil and filter after the treatment. You can also use BG MOA and Fuel System Cleaner (BG-44K or Redline SI-1). FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS, especially on the BG Quick Clean.

Checking.setting the valve clearance is complicated. Unlike other engine where you can adjust valve clearance or use shim, the VQ35 requires replacement of valve lifter that is out of spec. You can refer to the link below for info.

I do change the oil regularly. Not sure if the oil ever ran low because I have only had the car for about 25k miles, but as long as I've had it, it hasn't.

You say to use the BG Quick Clean and do multiple oil changes. What is the time frame for the multiple changes? Is it every 3k miles like a normal oil change?

Also, can you recommend somewhere to get the BG products. I looked online for somewhere local, and can't find any. Or is there a similar product sold in the local auto parts stores?

Check your power valve solenoid plastic linkage, if the power valve link is or gets unlinked the power valve assy will vibrate

Very good. So most likely it's due to varnish or some gunk build up.

If still you would like to try BG Quick Clean, you can get it from online resellers like eBay. Make sure you buy the BG Quick Clean for Engine. There is another product called Envirolution. Here's a thread on how to use BG QC. It's from the Q45 forum but should also apply to your car.
